Senior BI Developer
ACPWB is seeking a Senior BI Developer to help the Platform Engineering team scale the ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform to meet growing demand from the advisory practice. You will work in Python, Django, and PostgreSQL, contribute to data infrastructure reliability and scalability initiatives, and collaborate with a team of 7 who take engineering craft seriously and treat technical debt as a real liability.
About the role
The Senior BI Developer is responsible for the technical infrastructure that makes ACPWB's analytical work possible. The Platform Engineering team of 7 builds and maintains the ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform that powers our advisory practice, and this role is central to ensuring that infrastructure is reliable, secure, and scalable. Our analytical staff depends on this work. So do our clients, indirectly. You will know both are counting on you.
This role requires someone who can own data infrastructure reliability and scalability within Platform Engineering without waiting to be told what needs to be done. The ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform is critical infrastructure, and the people who depend on it — our analysts, our clients, our firm — need it to work. You will use Python, Django, and PostgreSQL on Google Cloud Platform to build and maintain systems that meet that standard.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to ACPWB's technical roadmap by identifying investment opportunities in data infrastructure reliability and scalability
- Implement and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster preparedness procedures for the ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform
- Build and maintain automated data pipelines and ETL processes supporting the ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform
- Support end users of the ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform with technical guidance, training, and issue resolution
- Manage vendor relationships for technical services and software subscriptions relevant to data infrastructure reliability and scalability
- Build internal tooling to improve analyst productivity and data access across the firm
Requirements
- Experience working in an Agile or iterative development environment
- Experience with cloud infrastructure management including compute, storage, and networking on Google Cloud Platform
- Strong attention to documentation, runbooks, and knowledge transfer in technical environments
- Demonstrated ability to write clean, tested, maintainable code with attention to documentation
- Ability to prioritize technical work based on business impact and operational risk
- 7+ years of professional experience in software engineering, data engineering, or a closely related technical discipline
Qualifications
- Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with dbt, Great Expectations, or other data transformation and validation frameworks
- Prior experience in a professional services or advisory firm technology environment
About ACPWB
ACPWB occupies a distinctive position: large enough to be credible, small enough to be agile, old enough to have a track record, young enough to still be building it. The people who thrive here find that combination energizing rather than disorienting. ACPWB was founded in Milwaukee in 2006 with a simple mandate: help working Americans understand and advocate for the compensation they deserve. Eighteen years later, that mandate has grown into a full-service research and advisory practice serving clients from early-stage employers to Fortune 50 enterprises — and we are still based in Milwaukee, because Milwaukee is genuinely underrated.
Interview Process
For senior roles, the process typically includes a portfolio or work-sample discussion. We ask candidates to walk us through a piece of work they are proud of and explain the decisions behind it. Anonymize client details as appropriate. We are interested in the thinking, not the client names.
What Success Looks Like In Year One
- Document the components of the ACPWB compensation benchmarking platform you own at a level sufficient for another engineer to maintain them
- Contribute meaningfully to the team's technical roadmap discussions with grounded, evidence-based input
- Complete a successful deployment to production with no unplanned rollbacks or escalations
- Identify and resolve at least one performance, security, or reliability gap in the existing infrastructure
