Senior Automation Engineer

Join an Integrated Design team that is working to deliver innovative solutions on projects around the world. Your Opportunity We are currently seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our growing Energy and Resources Team across North America.
Responsibilities
- Engages in the development of design through verbal, written, and visual methods including sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and redlines.
- Supports or leads project coordination meetings with internal multi-discipline team members and/or external consultants, owner reps, contractors, sub-contractors, and vendors.
- Aids other project leads with developing and managing the project scope, budget, staffing and schedule.
- Attends client meetings, which may at times be remote, as well as corresponding directly with the client.
- Participates in client project requirement meetings, PHAs, value analysis sessions, and basic cost estimating.
- Works on a variety of projects both domestic and international.
- Evaluates, selects, specifies, and designs all instrumentation specified systems or products for a project.
- Designs facility / mine-wide industrial networks: fibre-optic backbones and drops; leaky feeder radio; hoist signaling and Wi-Fi / LTE coverage.
- Selects network hardware including ruggedized equipment and appropriately rated equipment for the hazardous area.
- Specifies, designs, selects control and auxilliary systems and multiple networks in a mine environment.
- Develops instrument location plans and cable routing layouts.
- Completes cable schedules and selects cables according to service including LSZH, chemical and fire resistance.
- Designs within the hazardous area classification standards (NEC, IECEx, ATEX, ISA) for gases and dusts and confined space hazards.
- Specifies, designs, selects fire, gas, smoke, heat etc… detection systems and integrate them into the facility control system.
- Field instrumentation specifications and material requisition development.
- Takes the lead on a project team and mentor junior staff members.
- Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or Technical Diploma in a related engineering field (Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Electronics)
- 10 + years of experience in engineering, design, and construction in the sectors covered by “heavy industry” including Oil & Gas, Thermal and Hydro-Power Generation, Mining, etc…
- Particular experience in the Power sector will be beneficial.
- PE Licensed in the state of Texas or Arizona, or the ability/commitment to acquire one.
- Instrumentation & Controls PE License in other jurisdictions are beneficial as well.
Qualifications
- Self-starter, with the ability to handle change and work with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal abilities and willingness to work in a team atmosphere.
- Previous experience as a Lead Engineer on detailed engineering/construction projects with a consulting firm or owners team.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and project engineering experience.
- Ability to take the lead on a project team and mentor junior staff members.
- Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).
Skills
- Understanding of heavy industry sectors including Oil & Gas, Thermal and Hydro-Power Generation, Mining, etc…
- Experience in underground mine design will be a strong asset.
- Knowledge of NEBOSH, OSHA, and other relevant safety standards.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Solidworks, and other relevant software.
