About the role

The Senior Auditor conducts performance, operational, financial, and compliance audit projects under general supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The role includes providing consulting services, assisting with investigations, and adhering to organizational, professional, and ethical standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develops an understanding of the function or area to be audited to enable effective communication with client management and efficient audit planning.
  • Documents processes using narratives and flowcharts.
  • Develops appropriate criteria for evaluating financial and operational performance.
  • Gathers sufficient, relevant data through interviews, surveys, field observations, data retrieval and analysis, and sample testing to support meaningful conclusions, including applying statistical concepts for large data sets and making valid projections.
  • Documents all work in an organized manner so peers, supervisors, and clients can easily understand and reach the same conclusions.
  • Communicates with client management and employees as audit findings develop to ensure clarity and facilitate timely resolution.
  • Prepares clearly written observations describing the condition, cause, and effect of identified concerns.
  • Develops practical, effective action plans collaboratively with coworkers and clients.
  • Prepares concise and accurate written reports using text, graphics, illustrations, and examples to ensure clarity.
  • Maintains knowledge and skills through regular study, professional journals, conferences, and participation in professional associations.
  • Assists in conducting investigations, including surveillance, interviewing witnesses and the accused, and performing test work.
  • Reviews the accuracy and completeness of other auditors’ work papers and reports.
  • Contributes ideas for improving departmental procedures and methodology.
  • Performs other consulting and administrative duties as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience contributing to the development of auditing, accounting, technology, analytical, and management skills.
  • Must hold or be willing to attain within 2 years of hire one or more of the following certifications: CPA, CIA, CISA, CFE.

  • Familiarity with common indicators of fraud.
  • Familiarity with Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (Yellow Book) and Standards for Internal Control in the Federal Government (Green Book).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to think strategically and interpret a variety of variables.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand and walk.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally works in the field at various city, school, Valley Metro, and other locations, potentially exposed to weather.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Paid Leave

  • Accrues based on years of service:
    • 0 - 4 years: 12 hours/month (Fire 24-hr shift: 19.75 hours/month)
    • 5 - 9 years: 14 hours/month (Fire 24-hr shift: 22.75 hours/month)
    • 10 - 14 years: 16 hours/month (Fire 24-hr shift: 25.50 hours/month)
    • 15 - 19 years: 17 hours/month (Fire 24-hr shift: 26.75 hours/month)
    • 20 - 24 years: 18 hours/month (Fire 24-hr shift: 28.75 hours/month)
    • 25+ years: 20 hours/month (Fire 24-hr shift: 32 hours/month)
  • Extended Illness Leave: 6 hours/month (Fire suppression: 9 hours/month).
  • Funeral Leave: Up to three consecutive days for family.
  • Military Leave: 21 workdays per Federal fiscal year.
  • Holidays: 96 hours of annual paid holiday time.
  • Mental Health & Well-Being Leave: 24 hours upon hire (Fire Suppression: 34 hours). Not paid out upon separation.
  • Shared Leave Bank: Voluntary membership for extended leave; requires contributing 8 hours of Extended Illness leave per fiscal year.

Health Insurance

  • Four coverage types: Employee only, Employee + 1 Child, Employee + Spouse, and Family.
  • Three Aetna Health Plan options:
    • PPO 750: 100% preventive care coverage, lower deductible and out-of-pocket maximums, higher premiums.
      • Monthly Rates: Employee Only: $81.94, Employee + Child: $306.26, Employee + Spouse: $718.38, Family: $785.44.
    • PPO/HRA 1500: 100% preventive care coverage, higher deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, lower premiums, employer HRA contributions ($500 for Employee Only, $1,000 for other tiers).
      • Monthly Rates: Employee Only: $53.06, Employee + Child: $260.06, Employee + Spouse: $660.64, Family: $669.94.
    • PPO/HDHP-HSA: 100% preventive care coverage, higher deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, lower premiums, employer and employee HSA contributions ($1,600 for Employee Only, $3,100 for other tiers).
      • Monthly Rates: Employee Only: $25.10, Employee + Child: $195.72, Employee + Spouse: $547.88, Family: $550.56.
  • Optum RX (Pharmaceutical Benefits Manager) manages pharmacy benefits.

Dental Insurance

  • Four coverage types: Employee only, Employee + Child, Employee + Spouse, and Family.
  • Delta Dental 2026 Monthly Rates:
    • Employee: $2.80
    • Employee/Child: $18.88
    • Employee/Spouse: $18.88
    • Family: $49.36

Life Insurance

  • Paid by the City at no cost to employees; coverage equals annual salary rounded to the next highest thousand and doubled (four times for accidental death).
  • Optional Life Insurance: Available through payroll deduction for employees and family members.

Long Term Disability Insurance

  • Provides a monthly benefit for covered sickness or injury; available through payroll deduction. Annual cost is 0.00255 of annual salary (City pays half).

Retirement

  • Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program.
  • Vesting in the employer component after five (5) years of service.
  • Normal retirement after 55th birthday with sufficient years of service.
