Senior Audit Manager (Audit Practice Principal Designate)

About the role

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in securing the firm's Audit Practice Licence, developing the audit department, and leading audit engagements across a broad portfolio of clients. This role offers significant autonomy and the opportunity to shape the future of the firm's assurance services while working closely with the Directors on the strategic growth of the business. This role is critical to the continued growth, sustainability, and economic contribution of the Group in Guernsey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Audit Leadership
    • Lead and manage statutory audit engagements from planning through to completion.
    • Build and develop the firm's Audit & Assurance practice.
    • Support the firm in obtaining and maintaining its Audit Practice Licence.
    • Ensure compliance with International Standards on Auditing (ISAs), ethical standards and quality management requirements.
    • Manage audit assignments for a broad portfolio of clients, including regulated and non-regulated businesses.
    • Review audit files and ensure work is completed to the highest professional standards.
  • Financial Reporting & Accounts Preparation
    • Prepare and review annual financial statements for companies of varying sizes in accordance with UK GAAP, IFRS, FRS 102, and applicable statutory requirements.
    • Provide technical accounting advice to clients and colleagues.
    • Review management accounts and assist clients with financial reporting requirements where appropriate.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) regulatory framework.
    • Ensure audit and accounting assignments comply with all applicable professional and regulatory requirements.
    • Maintain strong knowledge of Guernsey Revenue Service requirements, including corporate taxation and filing obligations.
    • Keep up to date with developments in legislation, accounting standards and auditing standards.
  • Team Leadership
    • Train, mentor and supervise junior accountants and audit staff.
    • Review the work of team members and provide technical guidance.
    • Develop internal procedures and promote continuous professional development.
    • Aid with recruitment and the continued growth of the firm's professional team.
  • Client Services & Business Development
    • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
    • Provide practical commercial advice alongside audit and accounting services.
    • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and develop new business.
    • Represent the firm professionally with clients, regulators and other professional advisers.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • Essential:
    • ACA, ACCA or another recognised professional accounting qualification (FCA or FCCA).
    • A minimum of five years' post-qualified experience working within Guernsey, including significant experience auditing regulated businesses.
    • Extensive knowledge of Guernsey auditing, accounting and regulatory requirements.
    • Strong understanding of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) regulatory framework.
    • Excellent knowledge of Guernsey Revenue Service requirements and local taxation matters.
    • Experience managing statutory audits independently.
    • Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
    • Excellent communication and client relationship skills.
    • Strong leadership and staff development experience.
    • The ability to contribute towards obtaining and maintaining the firm's Audit Practice Licence.
    • Experience working with complex group structures and multi-jurisdictional tax and regulatory environments.
    • Excellent strategic, analytical, and commercial judgement.
    • Exceptional relationship-building, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
    • The ability to operate credibly with investors, banks, professional advisers, charities, and technology partners.
    • Reasonable knowledge about the digital assets and proficient with AI tool (Efficiency focused tools).
  • Desirable:
    • Previous experience acting as an Audit Principal or Responsible Individual.
    • Experience within a Guernsey accountancy or audit practice.
    • Knowledge of trust and fiduciary businesses, investment funds, insurance, banking or other regulated sectors.
    • Experience implementing quality management systems and audit methodologies.
    • Experience using modern accounting software, audit software and AI-enabled productivity tools.

Formal Qualifications (Indicative)

  • ACA (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales or equivalent recognised Chartered Accountant qualification).
  • ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).
  • An equivalent internationally recognised professional accounting qualification acceptable for audit practice in Guernsey.
