About the role
The Senior Associate Counsel will serve as a trusted legal advisor to the Sheriff, executive leadership, and agency members, providing guidance on a wide range of legal matters that impact daily operations. The ideal candidate will have significant prior experience in independently handling all aspects of motor vehicle accident cases, including trial experience in auto negligence litigation.
Responsibilities
- Independently handle all aspects of motor vehicle accident cases, including trial experience in auto negligence litigation
- Create and/or review and/or file pleadings and contracts
- Prepare and handle all matters related to representation of the Sheriff in forfeiture cases
- Respond to inmate and citizen complaints as appropriate
- Draft and/or review policies and procedures affecting the agency
- Provide training on current case law, legal issues and new legislation
- Review proposed and recently enacted legislation and work with FSA and PASS on legislative matters
- Participate in Inmate Welfare Committee meetings and provide legal counsel to the Committee
- Support agency initiatives that help fulfill the mission of service to the community
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate from a regionally accredited college or university
- Five (5) years of experience as an attorney, at least three (3) of which directly involve auto negligence litigation
- Admission to The Florida Bar
- Prior experience handling motor vehicle accident litigation and related claims required
- Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or licensed as a degree granting institution by the Commission for Independent Education
- At least 18 years of age
- Citizen of the United States or Foreign National with valid resident status and employment authorization
- Not illegally possessed or used any illegal drug within the last 12 months
- Not been convicted of a felony within the last 3 years
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of State statutes, laws, ordinances and regulations in the County, State and Federal courts, rules of civil, criminal and appellate procedures to respond to legal issues raised
- Ability to analyze and organize facts to define legal issues
- Ability to conduct legal research to locate relevant laws, regulations, ordinances and relevant cases
- Communication skills, both orally and in writing, to clearly and concisely communicate with members and citizens
- Problem solving skills to resolve conflicts and answer inquiries
- Knowledgeable about the physical abilities required for the job
