About the role

The City of Burbank is seeking a Criminal Prosecutor at the Assistant or Senior Assistant City Attorney level. The position requires admission to the State Bar of California and two to five years of experience in criminal prosecution.

Responsibilities

  • Under direction of the City Attorney, perform the more difficult, complex, and responsible legal work without detailed supervision.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate employees; manage caseloads and distribute work among professional staff.
  • Make effective recommendations regarding hiring, promotions, and transfers; recommend disciplinary action as needed, up to and including termination.
  • Perform legal research and prepare complex legal opinions for the governing body, boards, commissions, and departments.
  • Give legal advice to City officials and department managers; draft a variety of legal instruments.
  • Represent the City and City officials in litigation from initial preparation through the appeals process.
  • Investigate serious claims and complaints by or against the City; recommend action and take necessary actions.
  • Handle correspondence and hold interviews, telephone conversations, conferences, and negotiations in performing legal duties.
  • Attend meetings of the Council, boards, commissions, and committees, when required.
  • Draft proposed charter amendments; advise and assist in preparing for elections.
  • Prepare petitions for sewer and street improvements and forms for easements, bonds, complaints, notices, and assessment proceedings.
  • Assist in handling criminal matters, when assigned, and conduct training on new/complex areas of criminal law, evidence, or trial work.
  • Have the rights, powers, duties, and immunities of a City prosecutor when serving in the role.

Requirements

  • Admission to the State Bar of California.
  • Two to five years of experience in criminal prosecution.
  • Knowledge of civil and criminal law, local laws and ordinances of established precedents, and of sources of legal reference.
  • Legal principles and practices, including civil, criminal, constitutional and administrative law and procedure.
  • Trial procedure and rules of evidence.
  • Ability to analyze and apply legal principles; present statements of law, fact, and argument clearly and logically.
  • Ability to prepare proper legal instruments; win the confidence and cooperation of others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, City officials, fellow employees, and the public.

Qualifications

  • Senior Assistant City Attorney: Five years of experience as a practicing attorney and membership in the State Bar of California.
  • Assistant City Attorney: Two years of full-time experience in the practice of law and membership in the State Bar of California.
