Senior Assistant/Assistant City Attorney - Civil Division

Join the City of Yakima’s Legal Department Civil Division as an attorney specializing in labor and employment law.

Responsibilities

• Advise City Council and City departments on labor and employment law, including personnel policies, employee discipline, workers compensation law, accommodation of disabilities and other protected classes.
• Draft or review collective bargaining agreements, personnel ordinances, personnel policies, and civil service rules.
• Represent the City in related negotiations, arbitrations/grievances, and/or litigation.
• Attend and provide legal advice at Police Civil Service Commission, Fire Civil Service Commission, Charter Civil Service Commission, Police Pension Board, Firefighter's Pension Board, and other commission/board meetings and hearings.
• Represent said boards or commissions in related litigation.
• Advise City Council and City departments on all aspects of local government law, damage or injury claims or litigation brought against the City, and represent the City in negotiations, arbitration, and/or litigation.
• Draft or review ordinances, requests for proposals, and contracts for goods and services.
• Provide policy memorandums, advice, and presentations to City Council and/or City staff.
• Provide advice on other legal topics as necessary.

Requirements

• Doctor of Jurisprudence from an accredited school of law.
• Admission to practice law in the State of Washington, or ability to obtain a Washington State Bar Association license within six (6) months of hire date.
• Must be a member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association within six (6) months of hire.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
• Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check and become CJIS ACCESS approved by the Washington State Patrol before hire date.

Qualifications

Qualification for the role will be evaluated based on education and experience meeting the minimum requirements of the classification:

• Assistant City Attorney ($107,348.80 - $130,478.40 Annually)
  • Minimum: Doctor of Jurisprudence from an accredited school of law.
  • One (1) year of increasingly responsible professional experience in the field of law is preferred.
• Senior Assistant City Attorney ($136,968.00 - $168,708.80 Annually)
  • Minimum: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • At least six (6) years’ progressively responsible legal work experience in municipal or other government agency or private law practice.
  • Considerable municipal, civil, and/or prosecution experience preferred.
  • Litigation experience in both criminal and civil matters preferred.
