Senior Architect, Computer Vision

Rockwell Automation · Milwaukee, WI · 4 days ago
HybridFull-time

About the role

As a Senior Architect, Computer Vision, you will advance Rockwell’s Vision Portfolio that includes FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI, our vision inspection product for automated quality control, and help extend vision and vision-language capability across the FactoryTalk portfolio. You will own the model architecture, training, and deployment approach for vision and VLM workloads, advancing it as the field advances, and shape Rockwell's technical point of view on what vision should do on a factory floor.

This work is closer to define-and-build than to open-ended research: the ML/VLM models you build and tune run in customer plants under real-time, on-premises, and OT security constraints. You will build in an AI-first engineering environment — coding agents running inside a harness the team owns, evals gating AI-generated changes, enterprise AI tooling in the daily loop — and you will help advance the evaluation rigor we apply to vision models, so model behavior continues to meet the reliability standard plant environments demand.

This is a senior, high-performing, technical leader and individual-contributor role on a technical track. You will report to VP, Software Engineering and will work Hybrid in either Mayfield Heights, OH or Milwaukee, WI.

Responsibilities

  • Own the model architecture, training, and evaluation approach for FactoryTalk Analytics VisionAI and for vision capability across the FactoryTalk portfolio, advancing it as the field advances.
  • Mature the practices that scale vision work across the portfolio: dataset strategy, annotation pipelines, model selection, fine-tuning, quantization, and inference deployment to edge hardware.
  • Extend the eval suites and release gates that govern vision model readiness, and advance how accuracy, drift, and failure modes are measured and monitored in customer deployments.
  • Serve as a recognized resource on computer vision and vision-language models across our engineering teams — review designs, coach engineers, and raise the baseline capability of the group.
  • Partner with Product Management and fellow architects on the portfolio roadmap, bringing cost, latency, and accuracy tradeoffs to investment decisions plainly.
  • Design for OT and Industrial Control System constraints from the start: on-premises and disconnected inference, model provenance and signing, data residency, and protection of customer and Rockwell IP.
  • Represent Rockwell's industrial vision perspective in customer engagements, partner technical reviews, and external technical forums.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Years of Relevant Work Experience
  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Qualifications

  • Typically requires minimum of 8 years of related experience.
  • Master's or PhD in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience training, evaluating, and deploying computer vision models that reached production use, not only research or prototype settings.
  • Hands-on experience with modern vision or vision-language model architectures and with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Familiarity with Industrial Control Systems.
  • Experience applying vision-language models to practical tasks such as visual question answering, scene or document understanding, grounded instruction following, or multimodal retrieval.
  • Experience with edge AI platforms and inference optimization — NVIDIA Jetson, TensorRT, quantization, pruning, or distillation.
  • Experience with industrial or safety-relevant vision applications: quality inspection, defect classification, robotic guidance, OCR on production surfaces, or safety monitoring.
  • Experience with synthetic data generation or simulation-based training, including digital twin environments and domain randomization.
  • Experience establishing MLOps practice for vision work: dataset versioning, reproducible training, model registry, and automated evaluation gates.
  • Published research, open-source contributions, or conference presentations in computer vision or multimodal machine learning.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance including Medical, Dental and Vision
  • 401k
  • Paid Time off
  • Parental and Caregiver Leave
  • Flexible Work Schedule where you will work with your manager to enjoy a work schedule that can be flexible with your personal life.

Schedule

Rockwell Automation’s hybrid policy aligns that employees are expected to work at a Rockwell location at least Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays unless they have a business obligation out of the office.
