Senior Archaeologist

About the Role

Terracon’s Desert Southwest Region office is seeking an experienced scientific analyst to develop a paleomagnetic services capability with specific application to archaeological materials. This position will help spearhead the development of Terracon’s Specialized Services program within its nationwide Cultural Resources practice, part of the Environmental Planning and Permitting group. The role involves collaborating with regional, statewide, and national teams to support Terracon’s client bases and contribute to program growth.

This position is located in Albuquerque, NM, and requires a candidate who is committed to program growth, team building, communication, and mentorship, with deep technical expertise in archaeological analysis.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the establishment and maintenance of a paleomagnetics laboratory, including sample preparation, measurement, and reporting.
• Develop pricing structures for project execution and collaborate with marketing teams to build awareness of Terracon’s specialized services.
• Train and mentor technical personnel and support program growth through expanded market share and successful project delivery.
• Lead safety efforts, ensuring compliance with company safety rules and guidelines, and model a safe work environment.
• Manage projects or tasks involving paleo or archaeomagnetic analyses, including budgets, financial metrics, and revenue tracking.
• Prepare, review, and supervise reports and treatment plans, ensuring quality monitoring and improvement.
• Conduct site visits, field observations, and data collection in your area of expertise.
• Establish and update policies/procedures for technical projects and provide technical direction to junior staff.
• Participate in business development, proposal preparation, and presentations to clients.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal Cultural Resource Management requirements.
• Serve as an Authorized Project Reviewer and collaborate with regional and national teams to grow Terracon’s Cultural Resources practice.

Requirements

• Advanced graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related discipline with more than 10 years of experience in the field.
• Strong writing skills and experience preparing proposals, building budgets, and managing project finances.
• Familiarity with state and federal laws governing specialized analyses for cultural resource management projects.
• Ability to mentor and supervise junior staff in data collection, report production, and technical tasks.
• Capability to work collaboratively and build networks across the division and company.
• Ability to drive full-sized pickup trucks and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting equipment (20+ lbs) and working in extreme weather conditions.
• Flexible work schedule to meet project timelines.
• Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable violation history.
• Ability to pass a drug screen and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Membership in statewide professional associations or evidence of professional engagement in the broader community.
