About the role

The Senior Applied Scientist, Modeling and Optimization at Amazon will focus on developing and improving the last-mile experience through algorithmic and analytical work. This role involves designing, implementing, and evaluating state-of-the-art solutions to large-scale optimization problems, collaborating with software development engineers, and contributing to network planning, modeling, and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and evaluate state-of-the-art solutions to large-scale optimization problems
  • Collaborate with software development engineers to build and deploy models
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to reduce variable costs by improving the transportation network topology, inventory placement, transportation operations, and scheduling
  • Improve the efficiency of capital investment by helping plan the location and deployment of fixed assets
  • Create metrics to quantify improvements to fulfillment costs resulting from optimization models and tools

Requirements

  • Proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate state-of-the-art solutions to large-scale optimization problems
  • Strong background in combinatorial optimization, algorithms, algorithm engineering, and data structures, particularly as it applies to vehicle routing and related problems
  • Familiarity with Data Science and Machine Learning techniques is a plus

Qualifications

  • PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or Master's degree and 10+ years of industry or academic research experience
  • Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy etc.
  • Experience in applied research

Skills

  • Strong analytical and algorithmic skills
  • Practical experience in building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java or Perl

Pay

The base salary range for this position is $192,200.00 - $260,000.00 USD annually.
