Department Summary
MITRE’s Complex Systems Department (L644) is seeking an Applied Economist with experience in macroeconomic modeling to support the continued growth of our portfolio of economics work across an exciting and diverse set of sponsors.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Be passionate about developing custom research using advanced economic and econometric techniques.
- Have hands-on experience handling large datasets to conduct data-driven analysis.
- Conduct economic analysis in support of regulatory policy, pre- and post-implementation analysis.
- Present and communicate results of research as intuitive, actionable, and practical solutions to internal and external stakeholders and in a manner that can be understood by all audiences, regardless of technical expertise.
- Conduct creative application of economic theory and models in multiple domains when facing data constraints.
- Have an innate curiosity and interest in developing research questions and testing hypotheses with open-ended tasking.
- Work with a spectrum of government sponsors to gain understanding of their challenges, evaluate possible solutions, and conduct insightful, actionable analyses.
- Support development and application of a variety of advanced economic/econometric techniques to sponsor challenges, with a willingness to adapt and learn in a fast-paced environment.
- Take initiative in owning aspects of your work and be a collaborative teammate.
Basic Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Economics or equivalent with 3 years of related experience.
- Academic (teaching, research) experience counts toward minimum.
- Experience in advanced econometrics, including causal inference and structural estimation.
- Experience developing structural international trade, general equilibrium, or macroeconomic models to perform counterfactual assessments.
- Strong attention to detail and accountability for own work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to formulate rigorous models based on loosely defined or underspecified research questions and requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams, departments, and other organizations.
- Creatively develop solutions to overcome data limitations when needed.
- Demonstrated experience leading stakeholder/funder facing engagements and providing relevant day-to-day tasking for one or more junior staff.
- Applied experience leading technical development tasks and teams.
- Ability to obtain Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD or PhD Candidate in Economics.
- Experience in the following topic areas is desired, but not required: international trade, international finance, supply chains, critical infrastructure, and/or defense.
- Experience with dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) modeling or computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling is desired, not required.
- Experience working with government sponsors and agencies desired, not required.
- Applied experience leading large technical development tasks across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience engaging with external stakeholders and shaping work with those stakeholders.
- Prior experience developing solutions in a poorly defined environment involving multiple stakeholders at various levels of technical sophistication.
- Active TS or TS/SCI preferred.
