Senior Application Developer-Pharmacy Informatics

About the role

The University of Iowa Healthcare Pharmacy Department is looking for a 100% Senior Application Developer to join our Pharmacy Informatics Team. This position will provide workflow analysis, optimization, application build, testing and implementation of Epic System software related to the Willow applications, predominantly the Beacon application for CCI sites. Responsibilities include collaborating with project management groups, key stakeholders, vendors, contractors, and end users; system development for financial and clinical reporting or system build; monitoring production issues; testing special updates; and system documentation. This position is eligible to participate in remote work, provided it is performed within the state of Iowa and complies with the remote work program and related policies.

Responsibilities

• Analysis/Design
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to analyze workflows and develop application design.
  • Research system solutions and create functional/technical specifications for system build and complex integrated systems.
  • Lead design and analysis efforts and develop technical design and procedures for new or revised applications.
  • Lead the review and analysis of system problems to identify solutions and/or make appropriate referrals.
  • Demonstrate features to the user community and assess applicability, impact, and value.
• Implementation
  • Configure and customize applications.
  • Review the application build for efficiency, completeness, and correctness.
  • Understand and adhere to Change Management and IT Security policies and procedures.
• Support and Maintenance
  • Complete related Epic Certifications/accreditations or be eligible to obtain and maintain relevant certifications specific to the role.
  • Guide development and maintenance of testing scripts for implementations, special updates, and system upgrade cycles.
  • Resolve complex system problems through participation in 24 x 7 on-call rotations.
  • Propose software maintenance procedures and evaluate system upgrades to identify new functionality.
  • Develop standards for documentation to ensure recovery capability and stable performance of the platform(s) and applications.
  • Lead staff in development and maintenance of downtime workflows and procedures.
  • Travel to customer sites as needed to support application implementation, upgrade, optimization, and/or training.
• Project Management
  • Develop work plans and time schedules for computing projects, including phases, personnel, and equipment requirements.
  • Monitor progress and revise schedule and plan as needed.
• Business Analysis
  • Identify business system solution requirements by analyzing work processes and operations.
  • Evaluate business and information systems functionality.
  • Serve as the liaison for technical staff, users, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Analyze, document, and recommend business process design in applicable areas.
• Leadership/Staff Management/Financial Responsibility
  • Guide staff in documenting system procedures and guidelines for users, programs, and program modifications.
  • Assist in developing ideas for presentations to senior management.
  • Build and foster relationships.
  • Provide leadership in multiple areas of expertise.
  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching, and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.
  • May provide administrative and/or functional supervision over assigned staff.

Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Computer Science, Informatics, or MIS, or an equivalent combination of education and related application development/support experience.

Experience Requirements

• Experience in the development and/or support of applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance workflow processes, preferably in healthcare.
• Typically 5–7 years of experience for a Senior Application Developer role.
• Experience acting as the primary contact for the support, configuration, and development of at least one enterprise application or area of functionality, preferably healthcare related.
• Experience working with application owners and/or vendors to define system requirements, integration requirements, and understand business needs.
• Demonstrated experience working with end-users to define system requirements, understand business needs, and convert business requirements into functional/technical specifications for complex integrated systems build.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with basic project management.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with technical and non-technical staff.
• Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience supporting an EHR in an ambulatory or hospital setting.
• Experience with any of the following workflows: Inpatient, ambulatory, or other healthcare setting.
• Epic certification/accreditation related to Willow Inpatient or Willow Beacon.
• Demonstrated ability using tools for customizing vendor application software.
• Demonstrated knowledge of integrated system software solutions.
• Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical staff on system implementation projects.
• Strong problem-solving skills and experience adhering to regulatory requirements with respect to system configuration.
• Proven ability to write application test scripts.
