About the role
The Senior Advisor, Underground Health and Safety will support the development, implementation, and optimization of the Safety and Health Management Systems through strategic planning, field presence, anticipation, recognition, and assessment of critical risks and associated controls as well as monitor compliance of underground construction, development, and mining. This role is based at the Hermosa Project site, near Patagonia, Arizona.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with health and safety professionals to support continuous improvement of Health and Safety Management Systems and Programs
- Develop dynamic HSS operating systems through project to operational state
- Support and enforce HSS procedures and operational readiness from contractor project execution to S32 operations
- Support and collaborate with contractors and subcontractors to align with site safety management systems
- In consultation with the South32 Training Team, facilitate the development and improvement of mandatory regulatory training
- Support and coach risk management techniques to S32 team and contracting partners
- Support emergency management systems, exercises, and improvements throughout the project to operational state
- Provide oversight, guidance, review, or facilitation of events using systematic Incident, Cause, Analysis Method of (iCAM) approaches to investigations
- Support and participate in engineering and construction HAZOP and constructability reviews
- Develop team members to sustainable growth path in support of Hermosa operational state
- Build and implement assurance tasks to continually improve hazard recognition and risk management
- Ensure all activities comply with Federal, State, and company health and safety regulations
- Ensure tracking and reporting of safety performance metrics (leading and lagging indicators)
Requirements
- You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- - Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or related field
- - MSHA Certified Trainer (Surface and/or Underground Blue Card)
- - 5+ years practical experience in underground hard rock mining and/or construction
- - Experience in major capital projects in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) or client roles
- - Preferred experience in underground development (shafts, decline, material handling systems)
- - Preferred experience in self-performing and/or contractor management of surface infrastructure
- - Proven history of managing small teams, including development of team members
- - Previous experience in emergency management (preferred)
- - Comprehensive knowledge of underground hard rock mine construction and mining methods, equipment, and associated hazards
- - Sound knowledge and understanding of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977
- - Strong knowledge of risk management, including material risks, scope risks, field-level assessments, evaluation, and control validation
- - Effective written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration with cross-functional teams
- - Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, safety-focused environment
- - Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with data analysis tools is a plus
- - Commitment to workplace safety, confidentiality, and ethical standards
Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in underground development (shafts, decline, material handling systems)
- Experience in self-performing and/or contractor management of surface infrastructure
- Previous experience in emergency management
