Senior Accountant
Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
About the role
This position is responsible for accurate and timely processing, recording, and reconciliation of transactions including but not limited to local and state funds, accounts payable, payroll, and grant financial transactions for Virginia Peninsula Community College. Selected candidates will work at either the Williamsburg campus or Hampton campus.

Responsibilities
- Prepare and validate financial statements and other related schedules.
- Prepare financial reports involving the compilation and analysis of fiscal data and proper classification for reporting purposes.
- Work with grant program managers to track, audit, reconcile, and report on grants.
- Apply comprehensive accounting knowledge to produce complete, accurate, and timely financial information.
- Leverage accounting and grant knowledge to inform decisions on accounting and financial reporting matters.
- Analyze financial data, perform complex reconciliations, and reach accurate conclusions.
- Understand and present moderately complex financial information to diverse audiences.
- Analyze and improve efficiencies in complex processes.
- Interpret and apply accounting standards (internal and external).
- Identify opportunities to improve internal controls.
- Commute to and work at all campus locations as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality, inspire trust, and strengthen relationships across the college.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high accuracy.
- Adhere to federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations for compliance.
Requirements
- Extensive and varied accounting experience with primary responsibility for month-end and year-end closing cycles.
- Relevant work experience in grant accounting, including compilation, validation, expense analysis, reimbursement, and reporting.
- Primary or significant experience in preparation and/or review of year-end financial statement schedules.
- Experience serving as a subject matter expert in the interpretation and application of accounting principles.
Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards.
- Thorough knowledge of Grant Accounting, Grant Reporting, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 2, Part 200 Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.
- Thorough knowledge of month and year-end accounting cycles, including revenue, accounts receivable, procurement, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, cash management, financial statement preparation, and external audits.
- Working knowledge of Higher Education Accounting Standards.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations.
Skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in accounting software and systems.
- Advanced skill in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines under pressure, and adapt to changing needs.
Additional Considerations
Relevant accounting working experience within a higher education, governmental, or not-for-profit setting is preferred.
