About the role
The Senior Accountant at the Houston SPCA plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the integrity, transparency, and stewardship of resources that directly support animal welfare. This position requires a hands-on, values-driven finance leader with a strong ethical foundation.
Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting operations including general ledger, AP, payroll review, reconciliations, and reporting
- Ensure accuracy across financial records, donor-restricted funds, and investment tracking
- Maintain and continuously improve month-end, year-end, and audit processes
- Build trust through integrity and accountability by serving as a steward of organizational resources
- Establish and enforce internal controls and proper segregation of duties
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit standards, and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate and influence by partnering with HR, Development, and leadership to ensure financial alignment
- Communicate financial insights clearly to executives and Board stakeholders
- Lead and develop people by managing and mentoring accounting staff, fostering growth and accountability
- Create a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and support
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience (management level preferred)
- CPA or CMA preferred
- Nonprofit accounting experience preferred
- Advanced Excel skills and strong Microsoft Office proficiency
- Experience with financial systems (Blackbaud Financial Edge a plus; Paychex a plus)
