About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Accountant to join the accounting team of a growing Minnesota-based construction company. This position will own a broad range of general and technical accounting responsibilities, with a particular focus on lease accounting, fixed assets, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and post recurring and nonrecurring journal entries.
- Support month-end and year-end close activities.
- Prepare and maintain balance sheet and general ledger account reconciliations.
- Research discrepancies, resolve reconciling items, and ensure account balances are accurate and properly supported.
- Apply strong debit, credit, and general ledger knowledge to a variety of accounting transactions.
- Auxiliary accounting and reporting under ASC 606.
- Support accounting and reporting under ASC 842.
- Maintain lease accounting records in accordance with ASC 842.
- Prepare lease-related calculations, journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Monitor changes to the company’s vehicle, equipment, and other lease portfolios.
- Help ensure lease data and accounting treatment remain accurate and complete.
- Maintain fixed-asset records and supporting documentation.
- Record asset additions, transfers, disposals, and depreciation.
- Complete fixed-asset reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Help ensure capital expenditures are classified and recorded appropriately.
- Support compliance and audit support.
- Gather, organize, and provide accounting documentation for external auditors.
- Respond to audit requests and assist with follow-up questions.
- Provide backup support for state business registrations.
- Maintain organized documentation and clear audit trails for assigned responsibilities.
- Participate in an upcoming ERP implementation.
- Auxiliary accounting requirements, data validation, testing, reconciliations, documentation, and go-live preparation.
- Document current and future accounting processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve controls, reduce manual work, and increase efficiency.
- Help strengthen accounting templates, reporting tools, and Excel-based processes.
- Share accounting and Excel knowledge with other members of the team.
Qualifications
- At least 5-8 years of progressive, hands-on accounting experience, with the ability to perform work at a Senior Accountant level.
- Strong understanding of fundamental accounting principles, including debits and credits, journal entries, general ledger activity, accruals, and account reconciliations.
- Experience preparing journal entries and supporting month-end close.
- Demonstrated ability to independently prepare reconciliations, research discrepancies, and resolve reconciling items.
- Experience with lease accounting under ASC 842, or a strong technical accounting foundation and the ability to learn and apply ASC 842 independently.
- Experience with fixed-asset accounting, including additions, disposals, depreciation, and reconciliations.
- Working knowledge of ASC 606 revenue recognition.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, XLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, formulas, and the ability to analyze accounting data.
- Ability to explain the accounting rationale behind entries and decisions, not simply complete transactions based on an established process.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, well-supported work.
- Ability to research and resolve accounting questions with limited direction.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to work onsite in Maplewood three days per week.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on accounting experience.
