Responsibilities

• Evaluate and diagnose conditions affecting the mouth, jaws, face, and neck
• Perform surgical procedures such as:
  • Extractions of teeth (including impacted wisdom teeth)
  • Surgical management of maxillofacial trauma (fractures, lacerations)
  • Treatment of oral pathology (tumors, cysts)
  • Pre-prosthetic surgery for dental rehabilitation
• Manage patients with complex medical histories and provide consultative services
• Work closely with other medical and dental professionals (ENT, oncology, prosthodontics, anesthesiology, etc.) to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care to veteran patients
• Document patient encounters clearly and accurately in the VA’s electronic health record (EHR)
• Participate in departmental meetings, credentialing, and quality assurance activities
• Contribute to compliance with VA policies and regulatory requirements
• Provide education and supervision to dental residents, medical students, and other healthcare staff if affiliated with an educational program
• Participate in continuing medical/dental education to maintain surgical competencies
• Address the unique needs of veterans, including complex medical comorbidities, PTSD, or trauma history
• Advocate for veteran patient care and access to oral and maxillofacial surgical services
• Respond to emergent cases involving severe infection or other urgent conditions
