About the Role
The Security Response Team (SRT) Officer, under direct supervision, is responsible for containing and controlling immediate crisis areas and regaining control of incidents using non-lethal force. This role plays a vital part in contraband interdiction efforts, including searches and supervision of potentially volatile or aggressive youth within correctional institutions.
Responsibilities
- Physically respond to emergency situations to isolate, control, and quell disturbances beyond institutional response capabilities.
- Assist in crisis intervention and control of disruptive behavior among youth, referring acute problems to appropriate staff.
- Play a proactive role in agency contraband interdiction efforts, including routine and pre-scheduled searches and shakedowns of youth, visitors, and institutional living areas or grounds.
- Conduct routine and unannounced strip (for cause) and frisk searches of youth, and maintain a presence at institutional entry gates.
- Provide security assistance for normal activities and special programs, including movement, transportation, and supervision of potentially volatile or aggressive youth.
- Prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports regarding actions taken, contraband findings, and shift activities.
- Provide oral and written communication for briefing other officers, supervisors, and agency officials.
- Remain available for recall in emergency and non-emergency situations requiring additional support.
- Maintain flexibility to work various shifts and extended hours as needed.
- Stay thoroughly familiar with all policies governing contraband control, searches, property, and visitation.
- Attend and maintain certification required by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) and agency policy.
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety or Inspector General to support the agency’s mission.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Relevant experience in correctional, security, military, or police work; a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for experience.
- Ability to meet and maintain certification by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE).
- Knowledge of state laws, institutional rules, regulations, and Child Abuse Statutes.
- Understanding of the purpose, methods, and practices of secure facilities.
- Ability to instruct, handle, and supervise youth in various activities.
- Exercise good judgment and initiative in a variety of situations.
- Establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with youth, employees, families, and the public.
- Perform physical restraints on youth without restrictions.
- Willingness to work any shift, stay over if necessary, and work in locked quarters.
- Ability to bend, lift 50+ lbs., and perform mobile duties without restrictions.
- Pass a semi-annual physical fitness test.
- Must pass a drug test, background investigation (including criminal records, driver’s license, and child abuse registry), and potential medical examination.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent with 18 months of relevant supervisory experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for supervisory experience.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Certification under CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) within six months of employment.
- 80% or higher on competency/proficiency exams, with supervisor and teaching skills.
