Security Officer - Part Time

Western State Hospital (WSH), part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), has been a leader in psychiatric treatment since 1828. WSH is a 302-bed Joint Commission/CMS-accredited psychiatric facility located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, 103 Valley Center Drive, Staunton, VA 24401. The hospital is seeking a part‑time Security Officer to maintain adequate coverage for the Public Safety Department.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a bailiff for judicial hearings at WSH and take patient transports.
- Respond and assist unit staff with patients as requested.
- Conduct walkthroughs as designated by Administration on units and grounds to help provide a safe and secure environment.
- Check in and scan all visitors in the front lobby and patients returning via the front lobby using the walk‑through metal detector and hand wand.
- Transport combative, dangerous, public safety patients to/from other state facilities, court hearings, and appointments.
- Investigate and compile detailed information for writing special reports from start to finish.
- Patrol hospital property, monitor parking and traffic, and conduct vehicle accident investigations as deemed necessary by management.
Requirements
Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record and ability to obtain a valid Virginia driver's license within 30 days of start date. Experience in Law Enforcement, Public Safety, or related fields, including positions that involve meeting and dealing with the general public as a supplier of services. High school graduate or equivalent; bilingual ability; veteran or veteran spouse status are considered favorably.
Pay
Hiring Range: $23.05 per hour (Pay Band 3).
Schedule
Part Time.
