Distinguishing Characteristics
Security Services Assistants are classified based on the level of security concerns encountered, the degree of supervision involved, and the extent of training required. These positions do not have peace or police officer status but must hold a valid Security Guard registration issued by the New York State Department of State (DOS).
Illustrative Duties
- Provides directions and general assistance to visitors.
- Questions and deters loiterers; may ask unauthorized persons to leave.
- Controls access to facilities, confirms visitor identities, and operates security systems.
- Issues and manages employee ID cards and visitor/vendor passes.
- Operates metal detectors and screening equipment to prevent entry of prohibited items.
- Inspects buildings for fire hazards and other safety issues; reports deficiencies.
- Patrols premises to deter vandalism and theft.
- Secures buildings: locks doors/windows, closes fire doors and smoke barriers.
- Turns on/off lights or equipment as needed for building readiness.
- Aids physically disabled visitors entering or exiting facilities.
- Responds to emergency situations; administers first aid and summons help.
- Contacts emergency services (fire, police) as needed and may assist in responses.
- Led evacuation procedures during drills or emergencies.
- Operates fire extinguishers or hoses when required.
- Completes written reports detailing shift activities and incident responses.
- May drive a vehicle for patrol or emergency response duties.
Qualifications
- Security Services Assistant 1: Registration as a Security Guard by the New York State Department of State. Must meet established physical and medical requirements. May be required to undergo periodic medical exams to reassess ability to perform the essential duties.
- Security Services Assistant 2: Promotion from one year of competitive service as a Security Services Assistant 1.
