NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital features the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It operates a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, and multiple outpatient sites such as a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Security Guard I - Part Time, working 18.75 hours per week on variable shifts. In this role, you will patrol hospital buildings and grounds, protect patients, visitors, employees, and property, and respond to hospital emergencies while providing staff support on access control and special activities.

Responsibilities

• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Greets patients, visitors, and employees; responds to inquiries courteously and promptly. Identifies self by name clearly and concisely if requested. Provides directions and refers matters outside the scope of own duties to appropriate personnel, keeping patients and others informed as needed.
• Protects and safeguards hospital properties and installations. Patrols surrounding areas to ensure orderliness, including locking/unlocking doors, securing restricted areas, and checking fire hoses and stairwells.
• Operates and monitors security systems such as alarms, TV surveillance, access control, digital recording, photo processing, and CCTV.
• Maintains the Identification Card system and distribution process, updating employee access levels.
• Provides security escorts as directed (e.g., safe corridor to parking garages).
• Observes visitors, answers questions, and investigates reported losses or suspicious/unusual situations courteously and efficiently.
• Escorts unruly or unauthorized personnel from hospital premises tactfully and professionally, using restraining skills when necessary to subdue violators or emotionally disturbed individuals.
• Prepares and submits incident reports to supervisor. Explains hospital security policies and procedures as needed.
• Assists in controlling visitor traffic and maintains hospital package control policy.
• Responds promptly to fire alarms and other emergencies, unlocking doors, directing populations to safe areas, and assisting fire brigade or appropriate personnel.
• Detains law violators and represents the hospital in legal cases, including preparing legal documents and testifying as needed.
• Directs traffic, guards celebrities, and participates in official police ceremonies as assigned. May drive hospital vehicles.
• Patrols assigned areas on foot, verbally confronting unauthorized individuals. Responds to all security-related calls and incidents, taking control to bring them to a safe and rapid conclusion.
• Directs and monitors vehicle traffic to maintain a safe environment, including during emergencies to allow emergency vehicle access.
• Assists patients with special needs, escorts employees, patients, and visitors to parking lots, and directs them to appropriate hospital areas.
• Corrects safety issues proactively to prevent potential injury and communicates findings to the Security Manager.
• Performs general office and record-keeping tasks, including maintaining daily logs, incident reports, and missing property reports.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Current and valid NYS Security Guard License.
• Current and valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire).
• Current and valid Crisis Prevention/Intervention (CPI) certification (must be obtained within 90 days of hire).
• Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $32.36 hourly.
