Responsibilities
- Patrol all areas of the Medical Center, including stairwells and non-public areas, to prevent and detect fires, thefts, vandalism, and other security issues.
- Act as a liaison between patients, visitors, and the Medical Center, interpreting policies, procedures, and services.
- Provide regular reports on patient/visitor issues to administration; investigate and direct inquiries to appropriate staff.
- Assist in referring patients and visitors to appropriate services and resources; respond personally when alternatives are unavailable.
- Detect violations of the law, contact law enforcement when necessary, and represent the Medical Center as the complainant/witness in court proceedings.
- Prepare incident reports and conduct investigations as needed.
- Assist in managing disruptive patients, visitors, or staff; participate in restraining emotionally disturbed patients when summoned by medical staff.
- Direct vehicles into parking spots, re-park double-parked cars, and report parking violations or abandoned vehicles.
- Perform dispatching duties, including answering phones, entering information into the computer system, dispatching guards, and monitoring camera surveillance and emergency alarm panels.
- Assume switchboard operator responsibilities during the midnight shift (12am–8am).
- Log daily receipts into the account sheet at the end of each shift.
- Maintain customer service standards: respect, flexibility, professionalism, patience, and helpfulness in all interactions.
- Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Assess gaps in policies and procedures and create necessary updates.
- Understand and adhere to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct, Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.
- Perform driving assignments as required.
- Attend department meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
- Maintain department equipment (e.g., check radio batteries, clean and oil handcuffs).
- Escort employees to and from parking lots and other Medical Center buildings.
- Prepare and maintain department reports and records.
- Lock or unlock doors to offices, closets, etc., upon authorized request.
- Enhance professional growth through education programs, literature review, and workshops.
- Perform other related duties to support departmental and organizational objectives.
Requirements
- Must pass the security guard test and/or complete approved training through Bergen County Police & Fire Academy (preferred).
- Ability to drive standard shift vehicles.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English; knowledge of a second language is preferred.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Regular contact with patients, visitors, employees, and others across all hospital areas.
- Exposure to unpredictable conditions, including foot patrols, climbing stairs, and manually lifting over 40 lbs.
- Prolonged periods inside elevators, responding to calls, and enforcing rules and regulations.
- Frequent prolonged standing and walking.
- Use of physical force to restrain individuals when necessary.
Pay
Starting salary: $22.71/hour.
- Evening shift differential: +$1.30/hour.
- Night shift differential: +$1.60/hour.
- Weekend differential: +$2.05/hour.
- Acting Supervisor differential: +$2.00/hour.
- Additional $1.00/hour for IAHSS security certification.
