Section Manager Maintenance

About the role
The Section Manager Maintenance leads the Pellet Plant maintenance team in the safe execution of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance work in accordance with Cliffs maintenance standards to meet the goals of the Pellet Plant. This position is responsible for the Filter Building, Pellet Plant, Yards and Docks maintenance planning and execution, working with the reliability team to monitor and improve predictive and preventive maintenance systems. Oversight includes the Plant Central Shops, Plant, Basin Truck Shop, and Material Handling groups.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision for the Plant Maintenance leadership team in Pellet Plant, Central Shops, Truck Shop, and Material Handling groups.
- Manage break-in work prioritization and decision-making in each maintenance work group, coordinating with the Operations Section Manager and Supervisors.
- Develop and present a maintenance budget to senior Northshore Management for approval.
- Evaluate all stationary and mobile equipment utilizing the Reliability team to implement effective PM programs and improve overall equipment performance.
- Ensure the maintenance technician workforce is fully engaged in working safely, efficiently, and productively.
- Work with safety and environmental departments to ensure compliance and proper reporting for regulatory requirements.
- Manage maintenance planning and input into the scheduling process within the parameters of operating goals, approved budget, and asset management resources.
- Oversee training requirements for each maintenance work group.
- Analyze conformance and trends of deviations from the maintenance plan and develop action plans to reduce deviations.
- Maintain a long-term staffing plan with the Plant Maintenance Area Manager to ensure consistent support of the operating plan/strategy.
- Manage planning, scheduling, and execution of furnace outages and annual downtime within approved scope and budget.
- Utilize the reliability team to identify causes of equipment downtime and develop solutions to prevent future failures.
- Provide oversight for major equipment repairs and facilities projects.
- Work with the procurement manager and maintenance staff to monitor vendor performance and provide feedback.
Requirements
- Related Bachelor degree (Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering) or other related degree – OR a related 2-year Vocational or AA degree with a minimum of 5 years industry-related experience.
- Minimum of 5 years working experience in related maintenance work with mobile and fixed assets.
- Minimum of 2 years leadership experience.
- Experience in budget preparation and ability to prepare operating and capital plans for short and long-range planning.
- Champion of safe production and promoter of continuous improvement.
- Understanding and ability to communicate and implement safety, mine, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Strong leadership skills to direct multiple departments efficiently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Access, and MS Project; preference for experience with computerized maintenance management systems.
- Able to plan and coordinate multiple work tasks with employees, departments, and outside contractors.
- Ability to think logically using factual data and structure ideas to influence others.
- Capable of making sound, timely decisions under conditions of uncertainty and risk; able to multi-task and work well under stressful conditions.
- Ability to facilitate employee development through constructive feedback and continuous coaching.
- Capable of working effectively and safely using a participative management style.
- Must meet the physical requirements of the position by the close of the posting period.
Pay
The salary range for this role is $115,000 - $145,000. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.
