Purpose Statement

The Special Education Teacher supports the instructional process by developing students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living. Responsibilities include supervising students, developing lesson plans, delivering instruction, collaborating with staff, and addressing inquiries from parents or guardians.

Responsibilities

• Adapt classroom work to provide students with instructional materials aligned with individualized learning plans.
• Administer first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering).
• Administer developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency and develop individual learning plans.
• Advise parents and legal guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
• Assess student progress toward objectives (e.g., behavioral, motor development, communication, academic, vocational abilities) and provide feedback.
• Collaborate with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes.
• Counsel students to improve performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and personal issues.
• Create individualized educational plans (IEPs) to meet legal and federal requirements.
• Demonstrate methods for classroom and subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program.
• Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers.
• Instruct students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
• Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitor students in various educational environments (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips).
• Participate in meetings to convey and gather information required for job functions.
• Prepare written materials (e.g., grades, attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
• Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain safety and adhere to policies.
• Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Special Education.
• Wyoming PTSB Teaching Certification.
