Secondary Special Education Teacher Long Term Substitute

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Directors of Special Education and Building Administrators, meet the needs of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, activities of daily living, and post-secondary transition by implementing district-approved curriculum. Ensure documentation of teaching, student progress, and outcomes while providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures.
• Participate in Student Support Teams (SSTs) and assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for students.
• Assist students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
• Coordinate with administrators and teaching staff to ascertain individual student abilities and needs, including those with special needs, and familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
• Serve as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling to support personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; act as a liaison between home and school.
• Acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, research, and relationships with higher education and business communities.
• Maintain accurate and complete record-keeping systems for student information, including data required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal.

Requirements

• New York State Certification in Students with Disabilities (7-12) required.
• Content area certification preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment and/or Master’s Degree in Students with Disabilities (7-12).
• Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
