Reports to: Director of Athletics
About the role
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success while at the same time helping the athlete to achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem.
Responsibilities
- Full responsibility for the overall supervision of the cross-country program.
- General upkeep, protection, and inventory of equipment and uniforms.
- Know and abide by all state and league regulations.
- Assist the athletic coordinator with transportation and requirements for tournaments and special events.
- Attend all league meetings regarding scheduling and rule updates.
- Develop schedules for all levels of play and communicate changes to the Director of Athletics or athletic coordinator.
- Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment storage areas.
- Prepare facilities for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
- Make recommendations for awards and clarify the award policy to athletes.
- Participate in the budgeting process with the Director of Athletics by establishing requirements for the next season.
- Explain equipment guidelines (type, color, style, or technical specifications) and operate within the established budget.
- Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures in the student-athlete handbook and CIAC handbook.
- Explain and reinforce rules of training and code of conduct in the student-athlete handbook along with CIAC eligibility rules to all team members.
- Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' office; ensure athletes are only in authorized areas at appropriate times.
- Never leave athletes unsupervised during scheduled practices.
- Examine locker rooms, equipment rooms, and playing areas before and after team use for cleanliness and safety.
- Secure all doors, lights, windows, gates, locks, and alarms when leaving facilities.
- Submit necessary postseason reports to the Director of Athletics at the conclusion of the season.
- Responsible for the actions and conduct of the team whenever under their jurisdiction.
- Ensure the general health and welfare of student-athletes in the sport.
- Communicate instructions and commands using clear, simple, and positive language.
- Attend to injured or ill athletes and follow the athletic department’s protocol for injured athletes.
- Organize pre-season meetings for players and coaches.
- Evaluate performance of student-athletes and provide suitable feedback, balancing critique with positive and motivating comments.
- Maintain good public relations with media, parents, officials, opponents, and fans.
- Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and use.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Maintain current Connecticut coaching certification with the State of Connecticut Department of Education.
- Perform other duties consistent with the nature of the position as requested by the Director of Athletics and/or principal.
Requirements
- Valid Connecticut coaching certification or temporary emergency coaching permit.
- Updated CPR/First Aid training approved by Connecticut State Department of Education.
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of cross-country.
Pay
Appropriate placement on the negotiated teachers A-2 schedule.
