About the Role

Provides planning and delivery of direct and indirect patient care through the nursing process of Assessment, Planning, Intervention, and Evaluation. Develops nursing care plan in coordination with patient, family, and interdisciplinary staff as necessary. Communicates changes in patient’s clinical condition with Physicians, Nursing Supervisor/Manager, and co-workers as appropriate. Participates in discharge planning process.

The Seasonal Staffing program offers a temporary opportunity to work a minimum of 36 hours (typically 3–12-hour shifts) per week for a 12-week commitment period at a Seasonal Agreement rate of pay. After the initial commitment, the agreement may be extended in 4-week increments up to an additional 12 weeks. During this period, the employee will be classified as Per Diem and ineligible for benefits. At the end of the Seasonal Agreement, the employee may transition to full-time, part-time, or per diem status based on available openings. Floating between units may be required.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the standard of nursing care and implements policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department.
• Directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
• Assigns nursing care team members in accordance with patient needs, team members' capabilities, and qualifications.
• Documents patient admission assessment, reassessments, care plans, and other pertinent information in the patient’s medical record according to nursing standards and policies.
• Performs assessment on all patients on admission and reassessments as per policy; makes referrals to other disciplines based on assessment.
• Develops and updates nursing care plans, ensuring coordination with patient, family, and interdisciplinary team.
• Assesses and reassesses pain, utilizing appropriate pain management techniques and educating the patient and family regarding pain management.
• Revises the plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness.
• Performs patient care considering needs specific to the standard of care for the patient’s age.
• Performs treatments and provides services to the level of licensure.
• Receives and transcribes physician’s orders accurately, documents completion, and assists with examinations, treatments, and special procedures.
• Administers medication utilizing the five rights of medication administration to reduce potential for errors.
• Formulates and evaluates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs, including family as appropriate.
• Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves them in the formation of the plan of care.
• Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
• Functions as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
• Interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
• Ensures patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
• Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
• Answers telephones, paging systems, call lights, anticipates patient needs, and makes rounds of assigned patients.
• Initiates or assists with emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients’ conditions.
• Provides end-of-shift report to oncoming nurse, ensures narcotics count is accurate, documentation is complete, and physician orders are signed off.
• Communicates appropriately and clearly to management, co-workers, and physicians.
• Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with Social Service/Discharge Planner regarding in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
• Consults other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
• Participates in the orientation, instruction, and training of new personnel.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program.
• Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
• BCLS certification.
• ACLS preferred.
• Minimum six months’ Medical/Surgical experience in an acute care setting preferred.

Skills

• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
• Basic computer knowledge.
• Able to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities, and function under stressful situations.
• Ability to maintain a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
