About the role

Responsibilities

  • Resource Management Techs – Control invasive plant species, natural area restoration, trail maintenance, brush and tree removal, signage, timber marking, and timber stand improvement.
  • Laborers – Maintain and repair property buildings, grounds, and facilities, including landscaping, mowing, firewood processing, structure maintenance, sign creation, trail upkeep, carpentry, and plumbing.
  • Clerks – Perform tasks such as inventory, stocking, reporting, budgeting, and assisting with administrative duties.
  • Nature Preserves Stewards – Implement habitat restoration and management plans for native plant and animal communities, including invasive plant species removal, natural area restoration, controlled/prescribed burns, trail maintenance, brush and tree removal, signage, timber marking, and timber stand improvement.
  • Biological Naturalist Aides – Assist with future succession control, food plot plans, fish, wildlife, and vegetation surveys, data collection, species monitoring, mowing, planting, and managing habitats for wildlife.
  • Creel Clerks – Interview anglers, collect biological information and tissues, and enter data on relevant forms and/or systems.
  • Wildlife Science Techs – Assist with surveys, trap building and maintenance, equipment maintenance, volunteer coordination, data entry, and carcass processing.
  • Wildlife/Hatchery Techs – Assist with wildlife management activities or fish production and stocking, fish culture, fish stocking, facility and equipment maintenance, wildlife habitat management activities including prescribed fire, planting, mowing, disking, and tree cutting.
  • Shooting Range Officers – Monitor visitor activities, provide customer service, and enforce safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or one (1) year of work experience.
  • Ability to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to wear a DNR-provided uniform.
  • May be required to travel to different properties.
  • May be required to have a valid driver’s license.
  • May work around potentially dangerous heavy equipment.
  • Some positions may require completion of some college coursework in wildlife management, natural resources, biology, ecology, forestry, and related areas of study.
  • Ability to understand and apply basic biological principals, ecological variables and interactions, plant identification, herbicide application, invasive plant management techniques, and life histories of invasive plants.
  • Ability to lift equipment, tools, or materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical activity.
  • Ability to carry out assignments with general instruction and limited supervision.

Qualifications

Individuals may experience working in various environments, including an office environment, field environment, rugged terrain, and adverse weather conditions. Positions may require wearing a DNR-provided uniform and may involve working with DOC work release crews.

Skills

Basic biological principals, ecological variables and interactions, plant identification, herbicide application, invasive plant management techniques, life histories of invasive plants, lifting equipment, carrying out assignments with general instruction and limited supervision.

Benefits

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.

Pay

The hourly wage for seasonal positions varies, starting at $12.25/hour.
