Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Public Works Department

About the Role

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker - Public Works Department is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to maintaining city parks, roads, and facilities.

Responsibilities

• Assists with seasonal maintenance work, including mowing grass, operating tractors, trimming and watering plants, and cleaning restrooms.
• Picks up trash and recycling in City parks and along roadways.
• Cleans restrooms at City Parks and ensures facilities are in proper working order.
• Drives or rides in trucks to haul materials and transport equipment to and from job sites.
• Loads and unloads materials and equipment from trucks and trailers.
• Performs minor equipment maintenance and repairs.
• Washes vehicles and equipment.
• Paints buildings and other objects.
• Participates in snow removal responsibilities as designated by Director of Public Works.
• Completes the assigned tasks / projects assuring for safety and that City specifications are followed.
• Assists with cleanup of site, equipment, and public works facility.
• Communicates with Superintendent and other jurisdictions regarding project as needed.
• Assists with special projects as requested.
• Provides information and clarification in a professional manner to citizens who make inquiries.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age.
• Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
• Maintain an insurable driving record.
• Comply with City policy on use of City or privately-owned vehicles for City business.
• Pass a background check and drug test prior to employment.

Qualifications

• Two years of construction, facility maintenance, or grounds maintenance experience preferred, including the operation of hand tools and light construction equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to read and understand operating manuals, assembly instructions, and planting/care instructions.
• General maintenance skills, analytical skills, and good communication skills preferred.
• Ability to deal tactfully with the public and other employees.
• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
• Ability to understand and communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships.

Special Requirements

• Must be available especially during regular business hours or shifts to communicate with supervisors, customers, vendors, and any other persons or organizations with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
• Rotates through weekly on-call schedule for department for after hour situations.
