Seasonal Lab/Field Biologist

About the role
The primary purpose of this role is to provide a quality, professional service. Mosquito Technicians deliver service with courtesy, safety, and dependability and ensure each customer has a positive experience. Here at VDCI, we have a strong focus on preventing the spread of diseases through mosquito control. We complete mosquito surveillance and preventative services, as well as large-scale spraying.
Responsibilities
- Routinely inspect control zones for potential mosquito breeding habitat and the presence of mosquito larvae by visual inspection and “dipping”
- Assess each inspection site and utilize the appropriate control techniques, such as: no action, source reduction, biological control, public education and chemical control (including the application of larvicides and adulticides at the labeled application rates)
- May place and retrieve monitoring devices for accessing mosquito populations
- Accurately record all findings and control activities on the appropriate log sheet and GPS unit, and enter data into VDCI’s database as required by the contract
- Be thoroughly familiar with all applicable chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and handle/apply all chemicals according to label specifications
- Know and follow proper safety and spill procedures at all times, and use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) regularly
- Communicate respectfully, honestly, and knowledgeably to residents at all times during service request inspections, routine larvicide activities, or during any other public relations activities
- Know and follow the proper and safe operations of all equipment used
- React to change promptly and effectively, and handle other essential tasks as assigned
- Solid reading, writing, and verbal communication skills and the ability to present information in both internal and external settings
Essential Job Functions
- Work is regularly performed outdoors and may include exposure to potentially hazardous situations and substances such as weather conditions, challenging and uneven/unstable terrain, pesticides, dust and airborne particulates, excessive noise, biting insects, hazardous plants, and wild and domestic animals
- Comfortable with self-directed working conditions after a training period
- Must be capable of lifting and using items such as chemical containers and application equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
- Safely operate a motor vehicle and make sure it and all other equipment is kept clean
Requirements
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
- Open to learning and becoming knowledgeable in the area of pest control
- High school diploma or GED; related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence
- Basic math skills — add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to follow instructions for mixing on product labels
- Licenses/certificates as required by federal, state, and/or local regulations (covered by us)
- Customer-facing experience preferred
Pay
Base pay range: $16.00 - $25.00 per hour. While starting pay falls within the given range, it can vary based on factors like geographic location, skills, education, and experience. Total earnings may also be affected by overtime, incentives, commissions, performance, and route assignment (where applicable).
