Seasonal Grain Handler Technician

About the Role

This position is primarily responsible for working at a facility that loads and unloads barges and trucks. As a general laborer, you will perform a wide variety of duties based on the daily needs of the operation, which may include cleaning and repair of barges. The role involves working outdoors, assisting with the transportation of grain, operating equipment, and making equipment repairs. Extended hours and overtime opportunities are available.

Responsibilities

  • Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable), including wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Perform deckhand responsibilities, such as reading drafts, opening/closing lids, and tying off barges.
  • Perform barge loading duties, including loading barges to meet draft and quality requirements and overseeing deckhand(s).
  • Transfer, load, and move grain to appropriate locations while maintaining grain quality.
  • Complete documentation accurately and legibly.
  • Perform general clean-up, including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other housekeeping tasks.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and/or repairs where applicable.
  • Depending on the facility and location, duties may include unloading barges, cleaning barges, moving product to storage, loading trucks using heavy equipment, loading rail, loading products to required specifications, operating and monitoring dryers, and operating various heavy equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • No prior experience required; 1 year of experience in an industrial environment with a dependable work record is preferred.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to complete documentation requirements and follow directions using logical thought processes.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks and remain focused on exceptional customer service.

Physical Demands & Requirements

  • Ability to balance constantly/continuously and bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat frequently.
  • Frequently climb stairs, ladders, and work at significant heights.
  • Ability to concentrate on tasks without becoming distracted.
  • Ability to distinguish grade, color, odor, and damage characteristics in grain samples at some facilities.
  • Ability to distinguish differences in odor intensity or quality using the nose.
  • Ability to enter information into a computer.
  • Frequent grasping and reaching.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously, depending on daily needs.
  • Ability to meet requirements for and utilize all applicable PPE, including passing PFT and fit testing where applicable.
  • Ability to pass all required testing under FRA and DOT for this position (where applicable).
  • Ability to perform work in confined spaces and safely walk on barge surfaces, including working around deep/swift water.
  • Ability to stand and walk constantly/continuously.
  • Ability to understand and communicate verbally (in person and over two-way radio) and recognize emergency alarms.
  • Ability to understand and communicate written instructions.
  • Ability to walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, operate vibrators, etc., where applicable.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
  • Ability to work in environments with high dust levels around grain and other bulk products.
  • Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
  • Acutely aware of surroundings with the ability to quickly adjust to signals or changes in the environment.
  • Uses near, far, and peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks, including identifying problems with grain.
  • Required to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including non-standard business hours (evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours) at the Convent, LA location only.

Environmental Conditions

The role requires working both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequent use of personal protective equipment is required. Travel may be required (5%-20%), including off-site training and/or work at alternate locations.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this role is $13.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary depending on work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and relevant experience.
