About the role
MAX IV is building TomoWISE, a new tomography beamline dedicated to advancing materials science for sustainability. As part of a specialized team, you will collaborate with experts across the Technical and Science divisions to plan, install, and commission advanced infrastructure and equipment. You will contribute to developing and maintaining tomographic imaging methodologies and support future beamline users. The role involves shaping the beamline's initial scientific program starting from early commissioning in 2028 and proposing an independent research project within collaborations with MAX IV users.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the installation and commissioning of beamline instrumentation, including optics, sample stages, and detectors.
- Contribute to the implementation of relevant software for tomographic reconstruction and image analysis, in collaboration with the beamline team and other internal resources.
- Drive a research program within national and international collaborations, focused on materials for sustainability.
- Present and publish research results internally and in conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed journals.
- Engage with the MAX IV user community, deliver talks, initiate collaborations, and actively contribute to the outreach of the team.
Requirements
- PhD in a STEM field.
- Solid scientific profile in materials science, with a demonstrated research track record and genuine scientific drive in a materials science domain (e.g., structural materials, energy materials, geology, functional materials for sustainability).
- Strong background in tomographic imaging or related X-ray microscopy techniques, including hands-on experience with complex instrumentation integration, commissioning, and validation—covering both hardware (optics, sample stages, detectors) and software (data acquisition, instrument control systems, and data analysis).
- Strong background in experimental research, with a focus on microscopy and imaging, preferably using X-rays.
- Proven ability to develop research projects from proposal to publication, with a collaborative approach.
- Experience presenting at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
- Fluency in English—spoken and written.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a synchrotron beamline or similar environment.
- Proven ability to drive your own research program, e.g., track record of grant applications.
- Experience and ability to prioritize and communicate efficiently in a fast-paced environment of a large-scale user facility.
- Hands-on approach with a dedication to experimental work.
- Experience working in large collaborative teams, including student training, supervision, and grant applications.
- Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with internal and external partners.
- Background in scientific programming is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with AI/ML-based approaches for image reconstruction, segmentation, or quantitative data analysis is considered a merit.
