Scientific Grant Writer (24-Month Fixed-Term, 50% FTE)

About the Role

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Scientific Grant Writer (Writer 2) to work under the general direction of Dr. Amanatullah (PI) to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of externally funded research. The Grant Writer will support the growth and development of Dr. Amanatullah’s Arthritis & Joint Replacement research program, which has seen dramatic growth in recent years. This is a 2-year fixed-term position.

Responsibilities

• Develop and research ideas for written publication and communication on topics of moderate complexity.
• Consult with internal and external stakeholders to understand project needs and purposes.
• Compose written material for diverse audiences across various channels, including grant proposals and manuscripts for federal and non-federal funding agencies.
• Manage production of publications and communications, adhering to deadlines.
• Develop, compile, and edit supplemental materials (e.g., backgrounders, biographies, executive talking points).
• Establish and maintain contacts with key sources to identify story themes and newsworthy events.
• Maintain department style standards.
• Serve as a resource expert for program strategy development and management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a Science (preferred) or English/Literature with technical competence in sciences.
• Doctoral or master’s level experience in scientific writing.
• Minimum of five years of related experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
• Proven success in writing for publication in print, web, and other platforms.
• Excellent writing, interpersonal, and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor content for diverse audiences.
• Ability to synthesize complex materials and manage multiple deadlines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with web technologies and social media tools.

Physical Requirements

• Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

• Occasionally reach above shoulders, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects up to 10 pounds, and sort/file paperwork.
• Visual and auditory acuity, including color vision, required.

Working Conditions

• Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
• Occasional travel.
