Science Teacher - Southern Garrett High School - GCPS

Full-time, exempt position at Southern Garrett High School for the 2026-2027 school year. 187 workdays, generally 7.6 hours per day (may vary based on system needs). Supervised by the Principal, Assistant Principal, and/or Director of Secondary Education.

About the Role

The teacher will provide academic instruction and develop, implement, and supervise program-related activities to help students develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes in one or more fields of science, including general science, earth science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics. The role focuses on teaching scientific methods, problem-solving, and the application of science to practical problems.

Salary

Unit I Teacher Blueprint Career Ladder Salary Scale: $60,010–$69,169 (based on education and experience).

Responsibilities

• Prepare lessons, assignments, and instructional materials.
• Design learning activities demonstrating the application of science to everyday life, including research projects, experiments, and laboratory activities.
• Establish clear goals and learning objectives aligned with student needs, curriculum framework, and human growth and development.
• Instruct students in the proper use and care of scientific equipment, chemicals, and plant/animal life.
• Prepare, administer, and correct assessments; record results.
• Use a variety of instructional strategies to present subject matter effectively.
• Evaluate student progress using appropriate assessment techniques.
• Implement class management strategies to maintain an orderly learning environment.
• Ensure safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Create a classroom environment that fosters student involvement and achievement of learning objectives.
• Counsel students on academic and behavioral issues.
• Confer with parents and students regarding progress; participate in teacher-parent/student conferences.
• Serve on special committees as needed.
• Maintain accurate records as required by school, programs, law, and policies.
• Order and account for classroom equipment and supplies.
• Attend and participate in staff/faculty meetings and professional development.
• Improve skills and knowledge in subject matter, trends, research, methodology, technology, and multicultural content.
• Plan and supervise assignments for substitutes and volunteers.
• Use data to drive instruction and meet individual student needs.
• Maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Engage in lifelong learning through workshops, publications, networks, and professional organizations.
• Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, self-motivation, and accountability.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Valid or eligible Maryland State Department of Education teacher certificate in the applicable science field.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with diverse stakeholders (students, staff, parents, community).
• Proficiency in technology and applications.
• Ability to manage confidential information and materials.
• Demonstrated initiative, discretion, leadership, and independent judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Professional Certificate/License issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.
• Master’s degree or higher in an applicable field from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of three years of teaching experience.
• Dual certification in another academic area, including one or more science fields.
