Responsibilities
- Apply complex mathematical and physics concepts to simulate the propagation and detection of underwater acoustic energy, directly impacting the stealth and survivability of the U.S. Navy submarine fleet.
- Develop, refine, and execute predictive mathematical and physical models to simulate underwater acoustic energy propagation, far-field signatures, and sensor detection boundaries.
- Utilize MATLAB and Python to build automated tools, process high-volume sensor data packages, and conduct complex statistical trend analyses for the NAVSEA Vibration Machinery Program.
- Lead and coordinate technical tasking across multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring that overall team milestones align closely with project sponsor requirements.
- Interface directly with Navy private interests and Government technical sponsors to deliver technical briefings, write high-level technical evaluation documents, and explain complex analytical methodologies to all levels of leadership.
- Bridge the gap between advanced data science techniques and structural/hydro-acoustics engineering, while concurrently leading tasking workflows and interfacing directly with project sponsors to communicate findings, blueprints, and analytical strategies.
- Support program verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A) tasks for acoustic modeling and simulation frameworks.
Requirements
This position may require up to 25% travel.
Qualifications
- Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Data Analytics, Physics, or Mathematics.
- 7+ years of experience in technical research, engineering analysis, or data modeling contexts; relevant academic experience may be counted toward this requirement.
- Expert-level proficiency in writing code, debugging, and building algorithmic modules using MATLAB, Python, LINUX, Docker, Podman, or GitHub.
- Experience with advanced mathematics (statistical modeling, differential equations) and/or physics principles as applied to structural acoustics or wave propagation problems.
- Experience leading functional teams or technical projects, including direct customer/sponsor management and requirement scoping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with naval ship-silencing initiatives, acoustic trial procedures (radiated, platform, or structure-borne noise testing), or machinery health analytics.
- Familiarity with Visual Studio Code.
- Knowledge of existing NSWCCD specialized analysis systems or databases (e.g., Common Analysis Tool (CAT)).
Physical Requirements
The person in this position must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, or to communicate with co-workers, management, and customers, via email, phone, and or virtual communication, which may involve delivering presentations.
