School Van Driver

Responsibilities

• Follows planned routes making scheduled stops to transport children to and from school while obeying all rules and regulations.
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school vans.
• Communicates with the dispatcher via two-way radio during the route; provides updates to the dispatcher and reports delays, mechanical failure, emergencies, change in traffic patterns, or accidents.
• Manages student behavior when occupants are in the van.
• Provides a written record of violation of student conduct to the Transportation Safety Coordinator.
• Keeps the assigned van clean.
• Keeps to an assigned schedule.
• Performs a Pre and Post Trip DOT inspection for mechanical defects with assigned vehicle.
• Discharges students only at authorized stops.
• Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
• Transports only authorized students and School Department staff.
• Reports all accidents and completes required reports.

Qualifications

• Previous van driving experience is preferred.
• Extensive knowledge of motor vehicle laws.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent.
• Must comply with all applicable federal, state, county, district, and contract specific Van Driver requirements.
• Must have RI Drivers License or have the ability to get one.
