About the role
The School's Out Counselor supports the planning and implementation of activities, programs, and experiences for children in small groups at the designated program site. The Counselor ensures the general safety, development, growth, and skill achievement of the children in their group. Positions are available both before and after school.
Responsibilities
- Assist in providing and participating in all activities while ensuring the delivery of a quality program.
- Assist the Site Supervisor in greeting children and parents; ensure proper use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; clean and store equipment and supplies in the program area.
- Attend staff meetings, workshops, and in-service training per State requirements.
- Cultivate positive relationships and maintain effective communication with parents, children, and other staff members.
- Adhere to program and state licensing standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Lead in one or more of the following areas: sports, games, academics, or crafts.
Requirements
- At least 18 years of age (if under 18, apply for the Assistant Counselor position).
- Ability to clear state-mandated background checks, including criminal history and child abuse records checks.
- Knowledge in the supervision and safety of children.
- Possess leadership skills and can assist in encouraging and motivating children in a before- and after-school setting.
- Able to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, and parents/guardians.
- CPR, First Aid, AED Certifications, and Child Abuse Prevention training completed within 60 days of hire.
