The Vanguard School, founded in 1959 and located on a beautiful 28-acre campus in Malvern, PA, is dedicated to the growth and development of children and young adults with a variety of special needs through a collaborative and holistic approach.

About the role

The School Psychologist promotes understanding of the developmental expectations and the special education and related services needs of the students. This role provides consultation and training to faculty, staff, parents, and students, offering recommendations for remedial techniques and teaching strategies based on current research-based practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts re-evaluations for student special education eligibility as per State and Federal guidelines; writes and organizes re-evaluation reports; facilitates/participates in team meetings relevant to the re-evaluation process and student progress.
  • Provides evidence-based therapeutic interventions for adolescents with social-emotional and behavioral challenges (including DSM-5 disorders) that impact learning, academic progress, and participation in their educational program.
  • Provides consultation to Vanguard School staff and parents to improve students' social-emotional and behavioral functioning.
  • Participates in admissions interviews and pre-enrollment assessment of students applying to the Vanguard School; reviews applications and related materials.
  • Assists in planning and presenting parent support and parent training programs pertinent to the needs of students and families.
  • Assists in planning program-wide activities designed to enhance the Vanguard School educational program.
  • Promotes positive educational and behavioral health practices in resolving individual, group, and system-level problems related to school-based concerns.
  • Assists with mental health crises that may occur during the school day.
  • Provides training to faculty and staff in special education, developmental and clinical psychology, and behavioral programming.
  • Demonstrates competency in VFES core values: Communication and Listening, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Ethics, Professionalism, and Teamwork.
  • Complies with all organizational policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a professional, confidential, and ethical relationship with administrators, colleagues, parents, students, and others.
  • Attends and actively participates in faculty meetings, in-service meetings, and other required meetings.
  • Maintains professional development related to the position, including conferences, readings, and continuing education courses.
  • Maintains proper certification and licensure, staying informed on PDE regulations and state/national standards.
  • Performs related duties, special assignments, and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Educational Specialist (Ed.S), Ph.D, or Psy.D. in School Psychology.
  • Current, valid Pennsylvania Certification as a School Psychologist.
  • Current, valid Pennsylvania License as a Psychologist.
  • Minimum of three years' experience working with special education students.
  • Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the educational process.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others).
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Proficient computer and clerical skills.

Schedule

Monday to Friday, 7:45 AM to 3:30 PM (10-month school calendar, temporary assignment).
