About the role
The School Psychologist is to serve in the capacity of a consultant and co-worker with all teachers and educational service personnel in the public school system. The psychologist’s major interest is the mental health and educational success of all children enrolled in the public school.
Responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and the community.
- Manage the classroom.
- Perform assigned tasks.
- Establish goals and objectives.
- Design effective strategies to achieve goals.
- Make the subject matter relevant to the students.
- Supervise students in non-classroom settings.
- Promote education throughout the community.
- Ensure classroom activities conform to District policies, rules, and regulations.
- Deal with psychological problems of children through various techniques including psychoeducational assessment, consultation, counseling, and classroom intervention.
- Serve as a child advocate to ensure educational placement adheres to legal and policy guidelines.
- Conduct psychoeducational evaluations and interpret results to school personnel and parents.
- Participate in staffings for special education eligibility and maintain appropriate staffing records.
- Consult with all school staff on preventing learning and behavior problems.
- Collaborate with parents and school personnel in planning programs for students needing special assistance.
- Work with students aged preschool to twenty-one.
- Recommend ways to assist students referred for examination.
- Provide individual, group, or facilitative therapy for students with diagnosed behavioral issues.
- Participate in inservice training programs.
- Stay updated on new developments in the field.
- Identify all types of exceptional children within the school.
- Maintain case records on all referred students.
- Consult on mental health topics for instructors.
- Interpret school psychological services to teachers and parents.
- Cooperate with personnel from community health and social welfare agencies.
- Act as a liaison between the school, juvenile court, and other external agencies serving children and youth.
- Attend staff, professional, and interagency meetings.
- Conduct appropriate research.
- Provide community education as a resource speaker as needed.
Qualifications
- Kansas State Teaching Certificate/Licenses in assigned areas of instruction.
- Highly qualified as defined by No Child Left Behind Legislation.
- Ability to convey information to students using various methods to induce learning.
- Ability to use technology as an instructional tool.
- Ability to use appropriate classroom management skills to create a positive learning environment.
- Active in understanding current trends in the discipline.
Benefits
Term of Employment: As per negotiated teacher contract plus 10 days.
