About the role
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to join a school health team providing direct healthcare services and support to elementary school students throughout the school day. The School Nurse will work closely with teachers, school staff, parents/guardians, and healthcare providers to promote a safe and healthy learning environment.
Student volume varies depending on the day; the nurse may see approximately 4 to 25 students per day.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to students during the school day.
- Assess and respond to student illnesses, injuries, and health concerns.
- Administer medications according to physician orders and school policies.
- Provide first aid and emergency care when needed.
- Monitor and manage chronic health conditions in accordance with individualized health plans.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
- Monitor immunization compliance and assist with required health screenings.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student health needs.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, healthcare providers, and other school staff.
- Develop and follow individualized healthcare plans as needed.
- Provide health education and promote healthy habits among students.
- Support infection prevention, health promotion, and safe school practices.
- Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and follow established emergency procedures.
- Maintain student confidentiality and comply with applicable health and school regulations.
- Contribute to school health policies, procedures, and programs.
Requirements
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina or eligibility for North Carolina licensure.
- Nursing experience with pediatric patients or children is preferred.
- School nursing, school health, community health, or similar experience is preferred.
- Strong assessment and clinical skills.
- Ability to manage common childhood health conditions and respond to emergencies.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, families, educators, and healthcare providers.
- Excellent documentation and organizational skills.
- Commitment to student safety, confidentiality, and inclusive care.
- CPR, First Aid, and emergency response training are preferred.
- School nurse certification is an advantage but not required.
