About the role
We are seeking a compassionate, skilled, and highly organized Registered Nurse (RN) to provide nursing care and health support for students with complex medical needs in a special education school environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to students with complex pediatric needs in accordance with physician orders, IEPs, care plans, and district policies
- Perform and/or oversee specialized procedures such as: Tracheostomy care, G-tube feedings and medication administration, Seizure monitoring and response, Diabetes care and blood glucose monitoring
- Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately
- Assess student health status and respond to illness, injury, and emergencies
- Develop, implement, and update individualized health care plans, emergency plans, and nursing documentation
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student health records
- Communicate concerns promptly to families, providers, and school leadership
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, aides, transportation staff, and other team members to support student participation and safety throughout the school day
- Provide health education and training to classroom and support staff as needed
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, infection prevention standards, and medication/procedure protocols
- Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and care coordination activities
- Support a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment for students with developmental, physical, behavioral, and medical complexities
Qualifications
- Possession of a New York State License as a Registered Nurse
- Current CPR/BLS certification required
- Pediatric experience strongly preferred
- Experience with medically fragile children or children with developmental disabilities preferred
- Experience in school nursing, pediatric home care, complex care, rehabilitation, or special education preferred
- Strong assessment, clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergencies
- Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and families
- Knowledge of infection control, medication safety, and student confidentiality requirements
- Physically able to perform essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation), which may or may not include responding to emergencies quickly (requiring running up/downstairs or running to sports field areas), ability to carry emergency bag weighing approximately 10.5 lbs.
