Duties & Responsibilities
- Act as a liaison between parents, school personnel, physicians and agencies in school medical matters.
- Assume responsibility for the immediate care to students or staff members who have suffered injury or emergency illness, and administer first aid in accordance with established procedures when necessary: including awareness and implementation of district and/or building disaster plans as necessary.
- Act as an advisor within the building in matters of student health needs and maintaining sanitary and safe conditions.
- Participate in in-service training programs.
- Attend meetings, conferences and staffing regarding student health and health services.
- Dispense medications and keep accurate records regarding medications.
- Teach blood-borne pathogens protection and other staff development and training needs.
- Develop individual and Emergency health care plans for students with special health care needs.
- Notify staff of students with special health conditions and needs.
- Maintain and update health and emergency information data on all students.
- Monthly check and restock of health supplies; e.g. multiple first aid bag/kits in buildings, AED's.
- Complete weekly communicable disease report to SCHD.
- Maintain cumulative health and immunization records up to date and compliant with state law and school district policy.
- Participate in district nurse committee work, in-service training and monthly nurse meetings.
- Attend IEP meetings when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned by the administration.
Physical Requirements
- Sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk to carry out routine duties.
- Occasionally lift, move, or push items of 50 lbs. such as assisting children or moving/rearranging furniture.
- Supervise students in all types of weather.
- Occasionally interact with the public and other staff.
- Implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including appropriate physical restraint procedures and escorting.
Work Environment
- Noise level is quiet to loud.
- Work may be indoors and/or outdoors.
- Work may be in non-air-conditioned rooms.
- Substance-free environment.
- Fast-paced atmosphere with constant contact with students, staff, or the public.
- Direct responsibility for the safety, well-being, and work output of student.
Special Qualification Desired
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students to ensure each child reaches his/her full potential.
- Current certification in CPR for Health Professionals.
- An ability and desire to work with children, parents, administrators, staff, and the community to better the total educational process of the district.
- Experience working with children, desired.
- Willingness to make home visits as necessary or requested.
- Knowledge of Iowa Nurse Delegation grid.
- Knowledge of HIPPA/FERPA laws.
- Computer skills required to input and gather data in Infinite Campus.
- Ability to use Microsoft Outlook.
- Participate in continuing education and professional meetings.
