About the role
The School Nurse plays a crucial role in advancing student health, safety, well-being, and academic success. They provide comprehensive, evidence-based school health services, manage health conditions and emergencies, and support students' physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive school nursing services aligned with professional standards and practice frameworks.
- Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), emergency care plans (ECPs), and accommodations.
- Administer medications, treatments, first aid, and emergency care.
- Respond to medical emergencies and participate in school safety and crisis response efforts.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and legally compliant student health records.
- Support student participation in school-sponsored activities and ensure appropriate health and safety procedures are in place.
- Collaborate with IEP, Section 504, attendance, MTSS, and other student support teams.
- Consult and collaborate with students, families, school staff, healthcare providers, and community partners.
- Maintain current knowledge of Delaware school nursing regulations, evidence-based nursing practices, public health guidance, and available community resources.
- Attend and actively participate in required professional development, mandatory trainings, conferences, and ongoing learning opportunities.
Requirements
- Eligible or hold a valid State of Delaware certification as a Delaware School Nurse.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing (BSN).
- Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience.
- Valid and current CPR and AED certification.
- Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on the Child Protection Registry in the State of Delaware.
- Knowledge of the assessment of children and adolescents to effectively identify health issues and provide appropriate care.
- Knowledge and skills in working with a wide range of students, including those with chronic health conditions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration, and the general public.
- Demonstrate knowledge of evidence- and research-based strategies that effectively promote student learning, behavioral supports, social-emotional learning, and overall achievement for students.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to issues impacting various cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
- Proficient in Technology, such as Microsoft and Google Applications, Classlink, Schoology, Infinite Campus, etc.
- Understand and be able to perform job-related tasks.
- Must be able to serve students remotely and in person, depending on the needs of their students.
Qualifications
- Must be eligible or hold a valid State of Delaware certification as a Delaware School Nurse.
- Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing (BSN).
