School Health Nurse
About the Role
The School Health Nurse provides comprehensive school health nursing services, utilizing both in-person and virtual platforms, on a contractual basis to public school districts, charter schools, independent schools, early childhood and childcare centers, before and after school programs, and camps. Practicing in the School Nurse Consultant (SNC) model, the nurse delivers family-centered care by recognizing the child and family as full partners, providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient’s preferences, values, and needs. The SNC aligns with local and state public health partners on community health promotion and disease prevention. The program also supports consultation, referral information, training, delegation, and supervision to unlicensed assistive personnel in school and childcare sites statewide. It strives to support and facilitate the successful transition of children with complex health needs into the school and community environment while promoting partnerships between the Children's Hospital, educational systems, families, and community programs.
Responsibilities
- Ensure mandated school health services in the educational environment by identifying student health needs, interpreting health data, serving as the health expert, developing and implementing health care plans (either directly or through delegation to unlicensed personnel in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, Chapter 13), and implementing screening programs and follow-up.
- Contain the spread of disease by monitoring immunizations, utilizing and educating on disease control methods, educating on infectious and nuisance diseases, and assisting in policy development and implementation.
- Assess the health of the school community/communities by surveying health issue trends, monitoring accident and incident reports, gathering surveillance and screening data, interpreting findings for needed change, assessing risk and protective factors, and communicating health and wellness issues to the school and community as requested.
- Provide nursing interventions in compliance with current hospital and state regulatory guidelines (CDHS, CDPHE, etc.), policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
- Advocate for physical and emotional safety in the school environment through education, prevention programs, and intervention as needed.
- Participate in achieving departmental, divisional, and organizational goals, including involvement in unit-based or departmental shared governance committees focused on care coordination or population health.
- Engage in quality improvement and evidence-based research activities, building relationships internally and with other school health programs to collaborate and share best practices and data beneficial to children’s health regionally and nationally.
