Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent degree with a minimum of 3 years of full-time employment in the health field and/or experience working with school-aged children OR an Associate's degree or higher from a college or university
- Current Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
- Valid CT Driver's license and own transportation
- Must pass New Haven Public Schools background checks (criminal and DCF history) and be fingerprinted by hometown police

- Work and/or education in fields of education, health, or social work
- Experience working with school-aged children
- Bilingual

About the Role
The School Health Assistant serves as an integral member of the school health services team, assisting with school-based health initiatives, programs, and services to ensure students receive needed health services and required screenings. This role facilitates data entry and collaborates with all school health staff.
Reports to: Health and Wellness Department
Union affiliation: 884 R1 S1
Responsibilities
- Performs administrative and clerical duties
- Assists in the administration of State of Connecticut mandated screenings of students (vision, hearing, and postural) and/or oral health screens, if applicable
- Works with health team and school staff to schedule health screenings, presentations, and consults
- Enters student health data into computer programs and confirms insurance eligibility
- Assists in the process to obtain or transfer health records to and from schools
- Prepares, distributes, and/or presents health information/flyers to families, staff, and students on behalf of school health teams, nurses, or school health center/dental staff
- Represents school health teams, nurses, and/or school-based health center staff at school events, meetings, or committees as requested and reports back
- Participates in school, community, and family-oriented activities as directed by school health team, nurses, or school-based health center staff
- Facilitates the collaborative efforts between school health teams, school nurses, SHC, and dental staff
- Escorts students to and from the health room as needed
- Provides clerical and phone assistance (takes messages for nurse) and follow-up calls with parents, providers, and staff as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned by health and wellness department staff
