About the role

The School Health Aide works in the Safety & Security Department, reporting to the Nurse Supervisor. The position is 185 days per year, with a pay scale of OS0.25.

Primary Function

Assist the school nurse by caring for students for general health, injury, or illness. Responsibilities include facilitating routine screenings, documenting health clinic data and reports, and monitoring and inventorying supplies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administering first aid to injured students and providing short-term care to enhance the comfort and safety of injured or ill students
  • Administering and recording medications in accordance with District policy under the supervision of the School Nurse Supervisor
  • Taking and recording vital signs
  • Maintaining computerized listings of immunizations, chronic health conditions, daily visits, and health screenings for each student
  • Completing state reports on immunization and vision and hearing screenings
  • Notifying appropriate staff and parents when health-related incidents and accidents occur
  • Performing specialized procedures with appropriate training and supervision
  • Directing ill or injured students home or to appropriate emergency facilities when needed
  • Absorbing and disseminating information to families, volunteers, and district staff
  • Assisting School Health Team with facilitating required staff professional learning
  • Promoting preventing and controlling illness and disease as directed by the Nurse Supervisor
  • Determining when to act independently and when to refer medical situations to the Nurse Supervisor and an administrator
  • Learns and applies laws, rules, and regulations relating to health activities
  • Learns, explains, and performs health-related procedures
  • Interprets health and safety standards
  • Identifies and prioritizes health-related incidents
  • Works as a floater in different locations as required
  • Participates and completes all required District and Support Professional learning
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary by Nurse Supervisor

Job Qualifications

  • Basic math, writing, communication, and accounting skills
  • Ability to operate a computer and possess basic word processing skills
  • Ability to operate general and specialized medical equipment such as blood pressure cuffs, insulin, medication pumps, and other delivery devices, and AED preferred at hire
  • CPR, First Aid, and Medication certification are preferred at hire or within three months, required within the first six months of employment
  • Experience working with children is preferred, and experience working in a related field is preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with an MA or LPN preferred

Education and Training

Safety

To self and others, the employee must be familiar with the safety rules of the job and participate in all safety training provided by the department. Employees must wear personal protective equipment whenever required, ask for assistance if the task requires more than one person, and, if unsure how to perform a task safely, stop and ask a supervisor for instruction before continuing.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and smell.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Elementary level: In addition to the above, the employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Secondary level: In addition to the above, the employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
