School Counselor, Compliance & Student Engagement - Tennessee Connections Academy
Position Summary and Responsibilities
Working from your home office within Tennessee (preferred), the School Counselor, Compliance & Student Engagement will report to the Assistant Principal of Compliance & Engagement and serve as a key member of the school’s student support system. This position is responsible for supporting attendance, engagement, compliance, intervention, truancy prevention, and dropout prevention efforts for students in grades 4–12. The counselor will work collaboratively with school leadership, teachers, families, and community partners to identify barriers to student success and implement strategies designed to improve attendance, engagement, academic progress, and overall student outcomes.
The counselor will become an expert in Tennessee attendance and truancy requirements, school intervention systems, student engagement initiatives, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). This position serves as a primary point of contact for students and families requiring intensive support related to attendance, engagement, academic probation, and compliance concerns.
- Maintain ongoing communication and intervention support for students assigned to Tier II and Tier III attendance and truancy interventions
- Participate in and support the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) processes, including intervention planning, implementation, and progress monitoring
- Assist in the implementation and monitoring of Academic Improvement Plans and other school intervention initiatives
- Participate in Truancy Board meetings and complete required follow-up activities, documentation, and intervention monitoring
- Absorb and document attendance, contact, and engagement reports to identify students requiring outreach, intervention, or welfare checks
- Conduct student and family outreach, intervention meetings, and follow-up conferences to support improved attendance, engagement, and academic success
- Support crisis response efforts, welfare investigations, and student safety concerns as assigned
- Report and refer critical incidents that jeopardize student well-being as obligated by law, administrative regulations, or ethical standards
- Support schoolwide testing efforts, including student outreach, participation monitoring, and required travel for testing events
- Support professional development activities for teachers and school staff members related to attendance, engagement, intervention, and student support practices
Requirements
- Active Tennessee School Counselor License
- Bachelor’s Degree in School Counseling, Counselor Education, School Social Work, or related field
- Minimum three years of experience working with students and families in an educational setting
- Experience in a public-school setting
- Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft Office products and Google Workspace)
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Highly organized and punctual
- Customer-focused approach
- High degree of flexibility
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
- Team player with demonstrated leadership skills
- Ability to analyze and utilize student data to drive interventions and support student success
- Ability to travel as requested for state testing events, school meetings, truancy court hearings, and student support activities (may require overnight travel)
- Ability to work some occasional evening hours, as needed to support families
- Ability to work remotely
Preferred
- Master's Degree in School Counseling, Counselor Education, School Social Work, or related field
- Experience in school counseling, school social work, attendance intervention, dropout prevention, family engagement, MTSS, or student support services
- Experience working in a public school in Tennessee
