Counselor Responsibilities & Duties
- Effectively develop, plan and implement the district / school guidance and counseling program to meet the identified needs of students and parents.
- Effectively plan, coordinate, and implement transition programs for students and parents.
- Aid campus staff in teaching the guidance-related curriculum.
- Aid teachers in understanding student behavior, social, and emotional needs as they relate to classroom learning and maintain a positive classroom climate.
- Develop, plan and implement an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services.
- Present for students, parents, and community a professional, ethical, responsible, and positive role model that supports the mission of BakerRipley Community Schools.
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with faculty, staff, community, parents, and students.
- Assess school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
- Advocate for a school environment that acknowledges and respects all students, family, community, and staff members.
- Serve as a source of information on trends, research, applications, and effective practices related to at-risk students.
- Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education, career, and personal plans.
- Assist middle school students with development of a four-year plan.
- Provide counseling to individuals and small groups relative to their concerns.
- Use accepted theories and effective techniques to provide individual developmental, preventative, remedial and/or crisis counseling.
- Assess and respond to needs related to job improvement responsibilities including the development of professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
- Comply with local, state and federal policies in the area of guidance and counseling.
- Promote and follow ethical standards for school counselors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in counseling or related field
- Valid Texas state certification or license as a counselor
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
