About the role

This job opportunity involves obtaining blood, urine, and nasal specimens for clinical laboratory analysis. The position also includes evaluating and preparing specimens for analysis, performing moderately complex testing procedures, and ensuring proper specimen collection and distribution.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood, urine, and nasal specimens for clinical laboratory analysis.
  • Evaluates and prepares blood and body fluid specimens for analysis and performs moderately complex testing procedures as directed.
  • Prepares quality samples for delivery to the various clinical areas of the laboratory.
  • Processes all patient information including accurate billing through efficient use of computer functions.
  • Interacts positively and professionally with patients and staff.
  • Performs venipunctures, arterial punctures, micro-collection techniques, and other sample collection procedures according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Labels samples with collection time and initials, and properly prepares containers for 24-hour urine collections.
  • Maintains proper chain of custody for medical drug testing specimens.
  • Collects glucose tolerance specimens according to approved procedure.
  • Prioritizes STAT and routine specimen collection, and appropriately distributes them to Clinton laboratory techs.
  • Accurately processes specimens for transport to Main laboratory for testing, and prepares and mails various specimens as requested.
  • Interprets physician orders and contacts relevant parties with questions on testing or protocols.
  • Assists in training, including with extern phlebotomy students as needed.
  • Fulfills inventory and ordering of laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Monitors and operates a multi-line telephone system, directing inquiries and answering questions.

  • Organizes time to manage workload, prioritize tasks, attend meetings, and handle emergencies.
  • Works independently and is flexible to work varied shifts when needed.
  • Has a high school diploma or equivalent, and successful completion of a formal phlebotomy education program, including externship, or at least 1 year of phlebotomy experience.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic phlebotomy as related to laboratory testing performed.
  • A basic knowledge of clinical specimens suitability for testing.
  • Flexible to work varied shifts when needed.
