About the role
This is an Extra Help Position. Extra Help means this may be a Part-Time or Non-Permanent position. The number of hours worked per week may vary and depend on the needs of the department.
Responsibilities
- Receives the public and collects disposal fees;
- Visually inspects trucks and vehicles to determine type and amount of waste material;
- Measures the size of refuse loads to be disposed;
- Weighs vehicles by use of automatic truck scales and records weights;
- Determines proper disposal fees;
- Receives cash from the public and enters transactions into a cash register;
- Issues receipts and provides correct change;
- Balances receipts and cash register at end of each day;
- Affirms safety procedures and standards;
- Assures distribution and sorting of waste materials;
- Prepares and maintains routine and complex records and reports of cash receipts and waste disposal activity;
- Verifies, balances, and reconciles accounts and records;
- Prepares and forwards billing for credit account customers;
- Answers questions and complaints of the public and controls and directs traffic into the waste disposal facility;
- Operates a computer and electronic scale;
- Answers facility phone and two-way radio;
- Takes or relays messages;
- Composes daily tally reports;
- Collections statistical and regulatory data to prepare compliance reports for management review;
- Performs clerical and routine correspondence;
- Prepares standard reports associated with landfill and waste diversion;
- Establishes and maintains files, bookkeeping records and database including records of loads and times;
- Aids with scheduling coverage for time off requests in the scale house.
Requirements
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, County and departmental policies relevant to the area(s) of responsibility;
- Occupational safety and health practices related to inspection of waste for disposal;
- Cashiering practices and procedures;
- Basic principles and practices of bookkeeping;
- Principles and practices of file and records management;
- Methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation;
- Basic mathematics;
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff;
- The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar;
- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax;
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Qualifications
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade;
- One (1) year of experience in clerical, retail, or customer service including cashiering responsibilities for Scale Attendant I;
- One (1) year experience equivalent to Scale Attendant I for Scale Attendant II.
